And when you set the unit in your window, you will see how utterly unnecessary these problems are. Someone really dropped the ball when this product went from the cocktail-napkin-sketch phase to the manufacturing phase, apparently skipping that crucial middle phase of design->test->troubleshoot->redesign->repeat as necessary until the product is viable.
There is truly no excuse for the fact that the lip which needs to overlap the window sash is so skimpy that no such overlap is possible, no matter what kind of sash you have. And if you apply the foam strip to the bottom of the sash as directed, then the lip doesn't even come within 1/4 inch of meeting the sash, let alone overlapping.
The result is that, in order to secure the unit for adequate kitty safety, you have to ignore a lot of the printed instructions while you spend time jury-rigging extra brackets and improvising makeshift anchoring strategies.Read more ›
We have 2 cats and one of our cats loves the veranda and sits in there all the time: yelling at the birds, watching the dogs play in the backyard and relaxing. Our other cat, for some reason, doesn't ever go in there. Maybe she doesn't want to go through the flap, although, she uses the cat door. It's a bit of a mystery.
I would recommend it to anyone who kept their cat indoors but wanted to give them some fresh air and place to call their own.
I have no idea what type of window they think this fits but I have Anderson wood that are vinyl clad (no way) and replacement all vinyl windows (not a chance). I suppose it may fit certain types of old style wood windows with PERFECTLY FLAT sash bottoms. Here's the problem: the upper lip of the veranda that is designed to engage the bottom of the window sash (the window closes down on the top and holds the veranda in place) is only 3/8's of an inch high, partly because screw heads protrude and effectively reduce the bearing surface. Why so little material? I have no idea but it is absolutely a design flaw. Further, even if that paltry amount of engagement surface is acceptable to you, there is no way to get a screw into any part of the upper sash to secure the sash to this upper lip because the screw (if you could get it to hit anything at all) will completely miss unless you angle it up or do some other type of butcher job. My sashes are not completely flat on the bottom (Anderson) and this makes it impossible to install this unit because the angled bottom causes the wood on the window frame to be right at the edge of the metal upper lip discussed above. However, even with a totally flat bottom sash you only have 3/8's of an inch to play with. Not enough to safely install a screw.Read more ›
My only complaint, I wish they made it to fit a bigger window. We only have four windows that are small enough to accomodate it and two of them are bathrooms. We have alot of cats, so even though we are a little restricted on the size, I just ordered another one and we are going to put it in the upstairs bathroom window.
Anybody that comes to our house and see's the cats in the veranda love it. I am very happy with this product and would recommend it to anyone that loves their cats.
