We ended up with a couple of adult cats. I was adamant that they not have the run of the house because for various reasons, which include ones for their own safety. I tried blocking off the bottom landing with tall cardboard. I knew this was ineffective when I saw paw-prints on my kitchen countertop. Eww! I know where those paws have been and what they've been doing with them. So I bought a Scat Mat and put it on the landing at the bottom of the stairs. I started at the lowest setting. They walked right across it. I went up to the next setting. They got shocked but seemed to feel that the risk/benefit ratio was still in their favor, especially with the one who has the extra hairy paws. So I went to full power. THAT got their attention. After they crossed it once and had me chase them back upstairs and had to cross it a second time, the risk/benefit ratio no longer seemed so appealing to them. The mat has been working perfectly for a couple of months now and has prevented them from trying to leap over the cardboard. Even with the cardboard barrier open, they have not ventured across the mat since. The husband, however, has been less trainable. He continues to occasionally forget it's there. I know when that happens when I hear a thump as he jumps in surprise, immediately followed by swearing. (I do my best not to laugh.) You don't feel it with shoes but you certainly do with bare feet or socks. It's unpleasant, basically a carpet shock. I'm back here to buy another mat because one of the cats decided to sink his claws into my expensive massage chair last night. Their chair-privilege has now been revoked. I stole the mat from the bottom of the stairs and draped it across the chair. This morning, the male cat gave me a look of pouting disapproval because that had been his favorite chair. Too bad. My house and its contents are NOT their personal scratching posts. Stopping the problem BEFORE it happens is a lot easier on the cats and myself. Waiting until the mischief happens means me scolding the responsible party (usually the male because he's almost invariably the troublemaker) and grabbing a squirt water bottle, him hissing in response to being disciplined, then finding out that that response REALLY p's me off, and then the chase is on until he stops hissing and spitting at me. Seriously, you'd think I'd taken a belt to him instead of a little misting squirt of plain water. He's not especially bright but he is learning. He used to stand there and hiss at me. This last time, it was a single hiss and then the realization of the depth of his error seemed to flash across his furry face just before he made a mad dash out of the room. I didn't chase him this time. I had a different sort of revenge in mind. I took away his favorite chair, thus the pouty disapproving look the next morning. Now I need another scat mat so I can protect my chair and my territory. For those who think scat mats are inhumane, baloney. The sensation is unpleasant but not what you would call painful. It would be inhumane to, say, place their food on a mat and thus force them across it in order to eat. It is NOT inhumane to use the unpleasant but harmless stimuli of a scat mat to train pets because the animal chooses to try to cross it. They can avoid the unpleasant sensation simply by not stepping on the mat. In my situation, the mat actually decreases stress on the pets and myself because it clearly delineates what area is off-limits. It's not invisible or random. If they step on it they get a carpet shock. They don't step on it, no shock. Coupled with some positive reinforcement, it can be a valuable training tool for keeping pets out of mischief and even out of danger. I'd rather they get a carpet shock than destroy my furniture or dash out a door into the path of a car. Now if only my husband would learn not to step on it...

Finally! A decade later, the best deterrent we've found

I can't believe it took us approximately 10 years to find a product this effective. We stumbled upon it rather by accident, at a friend's house, out of desperation after trying various methods for our cats and foster dog.

Here were those various methods that failed (and why they failed, so that you, like I, can feel a little better about using static electricity on your animals):

(1) Double sided tape--nope, either changes the color of your furniture after a while, comes unstuck on the animals' paws, or gets swallowed by your ravenous dog.

(2) Foil on the counters or furniture--sure, works okay some of the time if you want to drive yourself insane while cooking or watching TV and look like you're from The Jetsons.

(3) Masking tape on the furniture--no, ruins the furniture, discolors it, and has the bonus of adding a lot of class to your furniture.

(4) Turning on the vacuum cleaner every time they do the undesired behavior--no, it can become like a game (especially for cats), and is prone to happening at 4:30 a.m. when the cats want to "play."

(5) Spray bottles/water guns--definitely not, this tends not to work and to have the undesirable effect of getting your possessions wet, which of course your cats will love.

Why the scat mat is the best thing we've tried so far:

IT WORKS--at least, it works far better than anything we've ever tried before. One jump up onto the furniture/table/nightstand by each of the animals, and none of them jumped up there again. Just one jolt was all it took for all of them to learn NEVER to touch the scat mat again. And for two of them (one of the cats and the foster dog), they never have even attempted to go to any of the forbidden places since. HOWEVER (and this is a big however), for one of our stubborn cats, she will go to the forbidden place when the scat mat is not placed at that location. Here's how we solve that problem (because we couldn't afford to buy 17 scat mats for all of the forbidden places she loves to lounge in, and we can't move fast enough to drag the mat around the house): we just move the mat to whatever room we're in, since she's usually in the vicinity hanging out with us anyway, and we put the mat in the most verboten place in that room. That seems to do the trick. If we've forgotten to move the mat, she jumps up to a forbidden place and rubs it in our faces. So, it's not a perfect solution for her, but it works pretty well overall.

Another reason we like the scat mat over other methods we've tried: it's not sticky, leaves no residue, and is easy to move around from place to place. (We've ruined kitchen counters and discolored our furniture with double-stick cat tape!) And although we're not in love with the shock concept (even though, as noted above, they've each only touched it once), it feels, at least to a human, just like static electricity--I've touched it myself by accident about 10 times.

In sum: HIGHLY recommended. This is the real deal, folks, after years and years of failed methods. What we're most excited about is being able to have a Christmas tree again that doesn't get pulled over by the cats (true story--it happened in 2005, the last time we had a tree). I know of no better deterrent for your furniture, tables, counters, etc. If only these were cheaper, I'd have one on every surface of my home.

This ACTUALLY works! I was skeptical at first as some reviewers said their mats weren’t functioning properly (which is somewhat true as our mat takes a few attempts to work); however, majority of the time it is working well. Our 2 Ragdoll cats were super curious about this mat when we first took it out and stepped on it... They quickly realized that it was the mat to avoid! Our female cat used to scratch our bedroom door early in the morning and would always wake us up. It was getting super annoying as we were hardly getting any sleep at night, so I had to find a solution. Once this mat was placed in front of our door, she hasn’t scratched it at all!!! It’s kind of funny to see our cats avoid/smell around the bedroom door to make sure the mat isn’t there LOL. We love our kitties and of course we feel bad about shocking them, but the shock really isn’t that bad! We shock them by accident when we pet them after they roll over our carpets, so it is the same type of shock they get from this mat. Harmless, but enough to keep them away from problem areas.

Update #2 Aug2021: I contacted PetSafe directly and after exchanging a couple of emails (within hours of me writing to them) they are sending me a new mat since they determined mine is defective within the 1 year warranty! Will provide a new update when I receive the new mat.
Update Aug2021:
Only 6 months have passed and it has stopped working. The red light comes on but it no longer does anything. It has been rendered useless.
I am so disappointed because it worked so well and now my dog has already figured out that it doesn’t shock her anymore. :(

Feb 2021: Finally something that keeps my pup off the mantle! She loves to watch TV but it is so hard to keep her off the mantle and therefore jumping at the TV. I have tried so many so many things and nothing has worked. THIS DOES! I only have to use the low setting! It bugs her but doesn’t seem to hurt her.

After trying so many other devices and sprays to keep my cats from scratching at my bedroom door in the morning, I found this Scat Mat. It gives off a static charge when the cat touches it with the strength of the charge being easily modifed when it is turned on. On the "kitten" level, it is just a shock like you get from your hair - the maximum will make you go "wow". It only takes one time and the cats learned to stay away from my door. So much cheaper than the canned air at $19 per can even with the cost of the 9v batteries.

Undecided. I cannot get these to work for the life of me. They keep shocking. When nothing is on it. Not sure why. Did contact customer service from the scat mat people. They have great customer service and replaced the two mats I bought but the new ones so it too. Why??

It seems to deter my kitty from the stove but I don’t like it activating when nothing touches it.

And my kitten is too smart as when I move the mat he knows he can walk on the surface. :(. I guess I’ll have to leave it there for a long time to condition him.

Product worked great! It might have been bigger than I needed but that was my fault. I needed it to stop my dog from counter surfing and it worked like a charm! He only got zapped twice and that was enough!
You can’t place this over top of anything made of metal, but I just put a towel down (ontop of my stainless steel stove).
I ended up using it in an area where he’d go to “mark” as well and he quickly realized he couldn’t do that anymore either.

My dog is a medium-sized, 45lb border collie. There are 3 intensity levels.
