About the Simply Clean Automatic Litter Box
Simply Clean is an innovative, automatic litter box that continuously self-cleans throughout the day. The quiet, slow-moving bowl constantly turns, making one full rotation per hour. During this time, waste is sifted out and carried up the conveyor belt into the covered, removable waste bin. All you need is clumping litter, and the litter box does all of the work for you.
- Continuously cleans without disturbing your cat
- Reduces odor and keeps waste out of sight
- Best suited for cats 15 pounds or less
How It Works
Fill the Simply Clean litter box with clumping, clay litter. For best results, be sure to fill the bowl all the way to the marked fill line.
The slow-moving bowl continuously rotates, making one full rotation per hour.
The waste makes its way to the conveyor and is carried off to the covered waste bin.
Remove the waste bin as needed to dispose of any waste. You can use any small bag as a liner for an even easier cleanup.
Simply Clean Automatic Litter Box Tips
1. Try to keep litter at the fill line marked in the bowl. Using too little or too much litter can cause issues with the bowl motor. Don't forget to only use clumping, clay cat litter.
2. Routine general cleaning is highly recommended to keep Simply Clean operating its best.
3. Make sure the tab on the litter guard is secured under the conveyor. If not, it can cause a popping sound.
4. Simply Clean is best suited for cats 15 pounds or less.

I purchased one of those vacation electric outlet timers that you plug lights into for $5. Instead, i plugged the litter box into it, and set it to turn on twice a day for 1 hour each time. Why haven't they built this into the litter box! It extends the life of the motor since its only on 2 hours a day vs 24 hours a day. It's not wasting electricity endlessly spinning, and its not endlessly making noise (although this thing is pretty quiet)
I've tried a few other self cleaning litter boxes, and with my timer fix, this one is by far the best one. Highly recommend only if you use a timer.
(The new 2013 version), they have added holes in the bottom base to allow the the litter to escape better. Also added rollers under the pan so it does not scrape on the bottom of the main unit. It seems the mount for the pan motor has been redesigned and I have not yet had the issue of the motor mount and gears being packed with litter and litter dust as before, Bat-Mite the Digger Cat is still flinging litter over the side and I have had no issue with the gears being clogged so far.
(The 2009 model) the conveyor motor finally gave out and just makes a grinding noise and does not turn the conveyor any more. I could have ordered a replacement motor but I wanted to check out the new design so I purchased the new redesigned model to see if maintenance was less and so far I am happy to say no issues so far.
The conveyor has also been redesigned. When the new one arrived I thought it was defective because it made a tick noise once at the same point in the conveyor rotation so, I returned it for a replacement unit. The replacement unit did the same thing and upon further inspection, I saw this was a normal function of the design of the new conveyor system. As the unit ran for several weeks, this once a minute tick got less and less until I no longer noticed it. Seems the action of the unit just needed time to break-in. With all versions I do have the issue of the conveyor cover being popped up deactivating the switch when a large clump of litter was moving up the conveyor and it would lift the cover enough to open the cover switch and the unit would stop. I was able to easily fix this by cutting a No. 2 pencil to about 1 inch long, placing it in the hole on the unit where the peg in the cover activates the switch allowing it to wedge itself in place by tilting sideways a little, this misalignment will hold the piece of pencil in place. (I then cut off the peg in the plastic cover with a razor knife) so the peg would not interfere with the 1 inch piece of pencil and the cover would install just fine.
Now when a large clump of litter lifted the conveyor cover up as it traveled up and then dropped in the hopper would not turn off the unit , the unit would keep operating and the cover will fall back into place after the clump drops into the hopper and all works just fine. Very happy with this unit.
Three years of use out of the old model before failure it very good. I ran the old model for 18 months without a timer so it may of lasted longer than 3 years if I had the timer installed on day one. as with anything it must be cleaned every week or so. All I do is remove the litter bowl and then dump off the litter that may be under the bowl into the bowl and then put it bowel back in place. I have never had to wash the conveyor, and so far with the new design I have had no problem with cat litter getting stuck to the bottom of the bowl like the old design.
I do change out the litter completely every 6 weeks to 2 months. I find that after a while, the fine clay in the litter that gets left behind after clumping will build up in the bowl. The ratio of clay and litter beads will not be correct and the clumping action of the litter will not be correct, thus allowing it to break into little pieces that will fall through the conveyor on the way to the hopper. Sometimes they are so small that these little clumps are the size of little beads, they stay on top of the litter and most hand litter scoops won't remove them either because they fall through the holes in the hand scoop as well. At this time it is time to change out the litter with fresh.
hope this long winded review helps. I would recommend this product.

ONE+ YEAR UPDATE
The PetSafe Simply Clean automated litter boxes started out great, at one point I spoke with Customer Service (866-738-4379, if you do rescue work, tell them) and they were fantastic, but now… two of the bowl motors have died. What was I thinking??? I called Customer Service and once again they were great. They are sending out two motors at no charge. They also mentioned that they offer a 25% discount on future motors when they need replacing.
Both bowl motors died within the first year. I hate that the PetSafe Simply Clean motors have to be replaced so frequently. …the bowl motor is worse than the conveyor. Both motors are priced at $14.95 as of each, Feb2017on the PetSafe website. Plus, your time, irritation, and the filthy job of replacing the motor.
Still a 4-star product, when compared to the LitterMaid and LitterRobot automated litter boxes. Probably should be 3-stars considering the $85 box may eventually go to being a $100 box when the warranty rums out and I have to start buying motors. (Even LitterMaids often — not always — have a longer life span.)
In service for 6 months now, the only time it has been turned off is to clean it or move it.
The conveyor is a little annoying to clean because it is a bit time consuming to "brush" the half-inch pellets off the incline but it is much, much easier to clean than the LitterMaids/Nature's Miracle rake and doesn't get as nasty for some reason. Once in a while a pellet will become lodged under the convey system and it leaves a groove in the freshly groomed litter, it doesn't keep the system from cleaning but I still dig it out. One time over the last six months someone used all of the available litter to build a pyramid against the conveyor (entrance area) and either the box or the pyramid builder pushed litter over the back of the box. I dismantled the pyramid so I don't know how well the PetSafe would have handled it. Loose stools don't bother it. Also, the plastic is easier to clean/wipe down when there is "something" stuck to the side, so I am assuming PetSafe's plastic is one of the new easy-clean formulas. To my surprise and despite the size, some of the larger cats use it.
One of the kids still stands outside the box to "cover" and in the process leaves a pile of litter on the floor. (PetSafe, make a bigger version. Soon, please.)
Still a great box.
Still no litter grinding away in the base of the machine.
Still only 4 stars because of size.
I just put a second unit in my Amazon cart. Following the suggestion of another reviewer I am going to try extending the wall about 3 inches; hopefully, it will eliminate the piles of litter on the floor.
UPDATE: The wall didn't work for my crew. I guess their legs aren't long enough or it made "covering" while standing outside the box a problem. I guess none us like walls.
I am planning to engineer a way to adapt the PetSafe to a LitterWorks cabinet.
UPDATE: The box will not run if the waste bin is not is place, a design flaw probably created by someone thinking they were being helpful. I don't want someone saying I voided the warranty by modifying the box. I switch out the waste bags for all of the boxes twice a week (to keep the house odor free) and there has only been a couple of times that the bin became so full that the clumps lifted the lid enough to shut down the box.
Over the years we have tried a lot of different styles/brands of self cleaning litter boxes designed for clumping clay-based litters, we always reluctantly went back to the LitterMaids/Nature's Miracle boxes. Until now.
Pet Safe Simply Clean self cleaning litter box is a little trooper, it has only been in service for about 6 weeks but nothing bothers it — not even the pyramid builders. The sides need to be taller, but then it would be too small for larger cats because they put their front feet on the rim of the box while using it. Because of size I deducted a star, it gets a 4-star rating. However, performance and quality are 5-star so far — so far. It appears some of the issues mentioned in older reviews have been addressed by the manufacturer, litter that has been kicked out has not found its way into the base of the machine, or at least it isn't grinding loudly. The sound is a soft slow cantering rhythm, we seem to have gotten used to it after a couple of nights. (So far no one with a loose stool has used it, I don't want to contemplate that and am hoping they put it in the bot.) If I didn't have to sweep up kicked out litter so often (and it lives a respectable life span of course) this would be a 5+ star box.
Yes, it is small but it is cheap and effective, well worth the money so far!
As the LitterMaids/Nature's Miracle boxes die over the next few months — they almost always die at around 13 months now — they will be replaced with these fantastic Little Troopers. They are lightyears-better-than-LM/NM and Litter Robot.
Bonus, no modifications necessary!
We are using Arm & Hammer Clump and Seal 50% lighter (light weight) multi-cat litter.
