The reason for 4 and not 5 stars is simply insulation. We live in NY and its incredibly cold here right now. When sitting near the window where this is installed I can feel a slight chill entering the room. This is probably because I have yet to apply the insulation tape which came with the product though. I am sure once I seal up all the tiny gaps it will be better insulated. The flap is held closed by a strong magnet (rare earth magnet I think) but tonight there was a strong wind and it managed to push the flap open once but it locked right back into place.
The direction control switches are good and allow us to let the cats in but not back out again.
Overall I recommend this product.
Good & Bad - The best part of the Windoor was the price. The assembly was super-easy. If you can use a screwdriver, you can put this thing together. It's also nice to let the cats do what they want when they want to. All too often I'd just sit down for the evening and one of my cats would be asking to come in or go out. No big deal, but when they go through their phase of wanting in & out a dozen times in an hour, it starts to get annoying. I love that they now control their own coming & going when they want & as often as their little hearts desire.
The downside to the PetSafe Windoor is I'm finding out it's going to be a considerable heat loss, heat gain area. It's been a little cool for the last few days and placing my hand in front of the side panels & flap, I can feel the cold just pouring in. I live in South Texas, when summer comes around, I think the heat will be pouring through since the door & panels offer no insulation value of any kind. Other problem, if your home has an alarm system, your system will be slightly compromised since the magnet portion of your contact switch will be on your existing window that's in an open position with the magnet now 12 - 18" above the switch. You can bypass this zone, but that's defeating the purpose of having an alarm system in the first place. It will cost $120 for the company to come & place a new magnet switch on the Windoor for full use of the alarm system.
I'm pleased with the PetSafe Windoor, but if it effects my heating/cooling bill, I'll need to consider one of the more expensive Windoors that offers a better insulate barrier.
It is advertised as weather-tight, however, cold air leaks in around the door flap.
I really like the locking mechanism but our cats get around the one way locks by scratching and pulling at the door with their claws.
However, it is adequate to the job, the cats like access to the outdoors, and I don't have to get up to open the door 10 times a night.
EDIT: After owning this product for awhile, I am lowering the rating quite a bit. The door leaks a LOT of cold in, not only wind around the door, but allows a lot of the house heat to leak out just because the plastic is rather thin. I would NOT recommend this door for areas that get very cold. Speaking of the thin plastic, the locks DO NOT work at all, as our cats pushed through anyway and broke the door flap in half!
