Setup is 10/10 very very easy to do, they really did a good job making it very painless which I appreciate. I have some home security cameras with app features and I wish they were as quick to set up as the petcube.
I have 3 cats so I put this in my living room where they like to hang around so that if my friends peep in on my cube they can always spot a cat to give them a little exercise! The audio feature must be very useful for dogs, for cats it freaked them out a little but I think when I go away on vacation next time they will be a little happier to hear my voice! I also helped my mother get the app on her phone and she was thrilled to be able to pop in and talk to my cats or play with them a little.
Camera quality is pretty good, although in low light it is lacking. Best for daytime spying!
The first issue is that the android app doesn't work properly when attempting to set up your PetCube. I have a GooglePixel phone, so it is a newer model of phone with the latest version of android so that isn't the issue. Bluetooth pairing worked fine but when attempting to set up the PetCube to get on my WiFi network, it failed after about two dozen attempts. I had the idea to switch to my old, probably 6 year old, iPad to give it a shot. The old iPad with an out of date operating system allowed me to set up the PetCube without issue. If you only own Android devices, don't even bother.
So after the ordeal of getting it set up I encounter several bugs in the app. The preference selection to activate the laser or sound doesn't always appear. This means you have to end the call and try again, often times you have to do this two or three times. Even with fast internet connections, (I've tested them and I can play video games without lag on the quality of connection), the lag is between one and five seconds and inconsistent at that. Calibrating the laser didn't seem to improve the accuracy or response time. When you attempt to set the quality of the video to be lower quality, as in you want to avoid lag, it doesn't actually set the preferences. You just get a list of preferences and the app ignores whatever you select. The app doesn't save preferences, say you want to have your call at 720p 10fps with audio on and laser off. No way to make that your default in this app so you have to manually do this when you start a call. There are tons of dropped calls so far in the few days I've used it. The speaker on the device is quiet and generally causes feedback feedback despite it not actually being that audible. I've developed apps before and I think one of two things is likely. Either they are not adequately prepared to develop the software required for this device or they shipped an unfinished product and are slacking on supporting the software and resolving bugs as they arise.
Over all it is a negative experience and an expensive one at that. I'm on the lookout for a device with software that is functional. I'd rather have a functioning product rather than 1080p resolution. I just want to keep an eye on my dog while I'm away at work and the software doesn't allow me to do that effectively.
