So, were the children happy to see a new book about Pete during their first visit to the library for the new school year? Goodness No! They clamored for "Pete the Cat" again. I read it once then again by demand. I thought, "Well. They don't want the new Pete." But I was wrong.
When they arrived in the library for their second visit of the new school year, they said, "Read 'Pete the Cat' again!" I responded: "What about the new book?" "Yes," they clamored. They immediately picked up the new words and began singing right along: "I'm rocking in my school shoes. I'm rocking in my school shoes."
And: "I'm eating in my school shoes. I'm eating in my school shoes." And: "I'm reading in my school shoes...." Where? "In the Library!" Oh, what a rocking cat! What a rocking book! Erick Litwin and James Dean, you guys have made so many children so happy with your cool Pete and his little yellow bird friend and, of course, those most excellent shoes.
I think that's all I need to say, but I will add that the illustrations are lively, bold, joyous, and inviting. Pete the Cat is a wildly popular book character, who now lives, I might add, in our library. He sits atop my reading chair, waiting to play with all boys and girls. He might even toss in a "I'm rocking in my school shoes!" Eric Litwin 14.5" Pete the Cat Plush Doll Toy
ADDENDUM: You know that wildly popular video website? YOU know? Well, I found the animation of Pete the Cat, an official video offered by the book's publisher. Here's what I did. I booked the computer room. When kindergarten came in (this is the same class which is subject in my review), I asked them to pick up the area rugs (about six, with each student holding on to one or another). We carried them down to the computer room, laid them out in this open space in front of the screen, and I told them to wait. They did, quietly, patiently. I loaded the video clip from, YOU know, that website. When they saw the book cover on the screen, they whooped and started singing: "I'm dancing in my new shoes...." Then I started the clip. Those children sang every word of the song and much of the words of the story with ol' Pete.
Then I opened another video clip. This one was Pete the Dancing Cat. Someone had taken Pete and moved him around, dancing with arm movements, leg movements, whole body. It is hilarious and so clever and cute!! But wait! When these kids saw that Pete was dancing, they immediately, as one body, popped up and began dancing with him. Oh, how I wish I had had a video camera that day. They were hilarious! Oh, what a great day! What a very excellent book is "Pete the Cat"!!
This book will serve really well for the beginning of the year. We usually use The Kissing Hand, but I will be using this book as an intro to tour around the school.
I love the moral of the story - that no matter what happens in life, it's "all good." The kids are going to love shouting "Goodness, no!" to the repetitive question "Does Pete worry?" I can see myself using that question during class when the children get into situations that make them feel sad or mad. :)
I love how there is an MP3 to the book, with the song, on the publisher's site!! I also bought the doll too.
Both Pete the Cat books will really kick start a new year of Pre-K with great attitude and fun!
The illustrations are simple and colourful and pleasing to the eye. This book is definitely a treasure for Pre-K teachers!! The story is cute and engaging. Perfect for 3 and 4 year olds!
