Their story is so much fun and the writing is so easy and beautiful. The book is perfect for a relaxing evening, with a coup of something good, after a long long day at work (or at least a stressful day). Which is why I enjoyed it so much. The atmosphere the author has created with these characters and their life together made me feel all sorts of good things inside. So I cannot but appreciate it!
Our main characters are far from your normal protagonists in love stories. They are far from perfect, far from rich and far from a perfect family. But they respect their commitment and try to do the best they can in a less than perfect situation. I loved Daisy’s determination to be there for her child, as reckless as her life may be. I loved Pete’s commitment to her and her baby.
I would have given the story all my 5 stars if it were not for the small confusions here and there with the characters and some conflict situations (if I can call them like that) felt a bit artificial. I wanted more complicated stuff (yup, I wanted more complicated… than not having a home and not being in a true relationship, I’m difficult, I know! )
All in all, this is a perfect book for a relaxing evening. Believe me, it really helped relieve some of my stress and some of that tension after a loaded week! This is my first book by Tani Hanes, but I have a feeling it will not be my last J Happy reading!
Daisy was stubborn and quick tempered. She had a heart of gold but wasn’t very trusting. While Pete was trying to have open communication with Daisy she would shut down. She did what she wanted when she wanted and really in the beginning didn’t think of the consequences. It is what got her in trouble in the first place. She will frustrate you at times but it is because of her fear and her quick temper that she does this. These two have great chemistry and I loved watching them go from strangers to friends to lovers.
These two didn’t start their relationship with honesty to others and under wary circumstances but you see over time how that changed. They got to know one another and Pete was always there for her. He didn’t sugarcoat things for her and did call her out on things. Pete did makes mistakes but they weren’t meant to hurt. The Black Lizard was one mistake. His reasoning though was more fear. He had realized he loved Daisy but was unsure how she felt and was afraid of her seeing his feelings. The big elephant in the room was MIchelle. Daisy didn’t really trust Pete when it came to her. Michelle was a witch. What she said to Daisy once was just so horrible and I loved how Pete dealt with that.
We see Daisy grow up and learn to let Pete in. To trust him and show her love. Even when they both feared the other didn’t feel the same they persevered and we get this sweet precious book. I love Pete’s view because we see how steadfast and loyal he is. We see him be so understanding and loving. He shows us that he loves deeply and that he is afraid but will be there no matter what. He accepts the little one as his even though it isn’t and he builds a life and home with Daisy even when they were both unsure of what will happen.
The story is sweet, funny and filled with love and some rash moments. No matter what we see a love develop and unfold with all the fears and facing them with this couple so that a family can begin and a new chapter start as a family. I am so very excited for the next in the series because we are now seeing them as a family and I want to see how they grow together.
Daisy was a unique main character. She knew what her desires were, and knew that people thought that she just slept around all the time, and she didn't want to care. Sometimes she couldn't help but feel hurt, but she tried not to let it affect her too much. She got into a relationship with Pete for convenience and so that her grandmother would get off her back, but she still wants to be herself and not be tied down to one person. Sometimes she seemed a bit annoying in her stubbornness, even though Pete was simply trying to protect her. But overall, she was definitely a fun character to read about.
Pete was also unique. He didn't want to tell his wife everything originally, but when people from his past start to show up, he has to admit some things. He definitely warms up to Daisy faster, but he isn't a one-dimensional character. In some ways, he was wiser than her and kept her from getting herself hurt several times.
The world-building of this novel was definitely great for a lover of NYC. For people who have never gone to NYC, they might miss some of the smaller hints. However, for everyone else the hints were prevalent. I definitely loved almost being able to "see" where Pete and Daisy were from my own experiences in going to NYC.
The pacing of this novel was also perfect. It was pretty fast, but that was not a bad thing> I was able to go through the entire novel in about two hours, making it the perfect afternoon romance read. Also, there were absolutely no editing errors. Everything was simply lovely!
I would recommend this book to romance lovers and anyone looking for a new unconventional romance story.
