Editorial Reviews

Review

“Peter Zumthor is one of the most philosophic architects working today. . . . [In] the captivatingly beautiful pages of this publication, . . . Thomas Durisch and the bibliophilic publisher Scheidegger and Spiess. . . . have taken pains to render palpable the multiple ways in which Zumthor’s art moves beyond the visual. Rather than simply juxtaposing sketches, maps, and design plans with photographs of realized buildings, as is often the case with the architecture coffee-table book, these visual materials are deployed in a manner that reveals the working of the architect’s imagination. . . . Each section is accompanied by well-written, translucent, somewhat rhapsodic reflections by Zumthor.”

Obviously anyone who appreciates Zumthor's work will want to obtain these books. In spirit, this collection is similar to WORKS; however, there are some significant differences, including more color printing and the inclusion of more drawings of all types. Overall, there are fewer photographs of each project when compared to the original book. Like WORKS, the layout is minimal with an abundance of white space. There is a heavy focus on unbuilt work; because of this, OASE 91 is also worth obtaining because it has a lengthy article in which Zumthor explains the use of models in his practice and also what guides his work.

While this is currently the definitive reference regarding Zumthor's body of work, it is not the definitive reference for several of the projects. If you are researching a specific Zumthor project that has been published elsewhere, don't expect this collection to be your only source of information. For example, say you're researching the Swiss Sound Box. The best sources of information for that project are SWISS SOUND BOX, STRUCTURE AS SPACE, and A+U no.360. WORKS contains drawings that were composed before building commenced. This set has some of the drawings and some color photographs. Even researching buildings like Steilneset, which have several pages devoted to them here, will require obtaining a copy of A+U no.495 and STEILNESET MINNESTED : TIL MINNE OM DE TROLLDOMSDØMTE I FINNMARK. The 1998 A+U EXTRA EDITION still contains the most comprehensive coverage of many of the older buildings. It's also worth noting that WORKS has a fair amount of content that was not included in this set, such as photographs and coverage of certain projects.

This is a long awaited 5-volumes architectural monograph of Peter Zumthor. If you expect lots of building for his 28 years career then you might be disappointed because many of his projects didn't get built. But I soon realize that wasn’t a bad thing either because he wasn’t interested in the quantities of his work but he devoted most of his time and energy to create the sense of one-of-a-kind-ness to every project. The sense of one-of-a-kind-ness is especially significant through building techtonics and user experience, which distinguished his architecture from convention.
Most of the writings in the monograph were Mr. Zumthor’s own words to describe the background, inspiration and process for each of his project. The words are minimal and truthful to his intentions, altogether with many unintended phenomenons left us in awestruck with profoundness of his architecture.

Absolutely spectacular. A good balance of photographs, sketches, and drawings. Minimal in design, but exploding in content. Highly recommended for all purposes; drawing, design, models, details, photography, materials, graphic presentation.

I agree it's a great collection -- BUT for the price that is being charged, I would think that the publisher could have made a nice slipcase/box to store the five volumes in ...
Instead the volumes arrive in a cheap cardboard holder that is certainly recyclable, but nothing more than a disposable container.

This compendium of the work of Peter Zumthor is everything I had hoped when I ordered it a year ago.
it illustrates in the most beautiful way the projects of his career and his unbelievable attention to detail and the joining of materials. The models, watercolors and photographs artistically complement the architectural darwings . I would buy this again and gladly. I will spend many hours going over these buildings with great pleasure.

After spending almost a full year waiting for the release of this Set, I have to comment that I've come away slightly disappointed. Do not misunderstand me, the books are beautifully composed, with some great writing by Zumthor, and some beautiful photographs. The issue arises with the originality of the content. Back when this book was announced, years ago, there was discussion that Zumthor had hired his own photographer (or team) to catalog pictures of his work, how he thought it should be portrayed. This was extremelly exciting, as anyone who knows Zumthor or tried to research him, knows he does not publish information about his work very often.

When I started reading through the set, I was highly disappointed with the content, as a large portion of the photos are actually the exact same ones you can find on the internet. The essays by Zumthor are fantastic as usual, and there are some new pictures of his sketches and some models, but overall, I was hoping to see a lot more. I wasn't looking for a coffee table style book with lots of pretty pictures, but was just hoping that with the guidance of Zumthor, I would see some new imagery that would help engage the reader into how this amazing Architect designs.

I bet most of the people who purchase this book expect Zumthor's unique details of architecture. However, unfortunately, this book contains 99% of photos we can get from googling, and 1% of such brief architectural drawings. None of Zumthor's professional detailing is included. If you go just by the reputation of Zumthor and want to collect whatever he publishes, over $200 might be fine. However, If you don't have a purpose of pure collection, googling will be enough. This book doesn't have much than that.
