About the Author
SEABROOKE LECKIE is a freelance writer and naturalist who became interested in moths after realizing they suited her night-owl tendencies much better than birds. She lives in eastern Ontario with her husband and two young kids, with whom she enjoys roaming their rural yard and discovering its inhabitants, six-legged and otherwise.
DAVID BEADLE is a professional freelance bird illustrator who happens to have a passion for moths. He has been interested in moths for over thirty years, both in his native UK and in Ontario, Canada. For the past two decades he has traveled extensively within Ontario documenting and photographing moths. He has a particular interest in identification and feels it is important to portray these fascinating creatures alive and in their natural resting positions.

About the author

Seabrooke Leckie is a freelance biologist and writer living in rural eastern Ontario. She holds a B.Sc.H. in Zoology and has worked on field research contracts in many parts of the continent, from California to Québec, British Columbia to Ohio, as well as her home province of Ontario. She discovered moths quite by accident one summer while away on contract, and they've since become her number one passion. Birds are her second interest; she is a federally-licensed bird bander and volunteers each summer with a local bird research organization. She's the co-author of the new Peterson Field Guide to Moths of Northeastern North America, and has been involved with other publications such as the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas and the newsletter of the Ontario Field Ornithologists. Most afternoons you can find her outdoors, peering closely at flora and fauna, camera in hand; nights, of course, are spent at her moth sheet. She blogs her discoveries at her website, seabrookeleckie.com

The main area where it falls short is the same as the northeastern guide. It is providing help to the beginner in getting an overview of the variety of moths and devising a systematic process for narrowing down the identification. For example, while it does divide the moths into taxonomic groups, it fails to even provide a table of contents listing what those groups are. The only way you can discover the taxonomy is by flipping through all 600 pages of the guide. Moreover, having a more detailed table of contents would be helpful even to those more experienced by allowing them to more quickly jump to the relevant section of the book. Having a quick index would serve a similar purpose, but is also missing from the book.
I should note, however, that at the back of the book is a full page spread with silhouettes of various moth types. This was likely inspired by similar pages in the founding Peterson guides – the bird guides written by Roger Tory Peterson himself. I think this is an excellent step in the right direction.
The drawings are excellent. Real Photos Would be nice too . But I recommend both of these books .
LEPIDOPTERIST & CAN FIND INACCURACIES, IF LOOK HARD, BUT THESE ARE AS
GOOD AS IT GETS.
