TROUBLE SHOOTING STEPS
1. When connecting failed:
①Please make sure you power it with DC power. It could not connect to wifi when powered by batteries.
②Please make sure your home wifi name and password are correct (avoid any unnecessary blank space)
③Please make sure your home wifi setting allow the feeder to connect by password.
④Please reset your router to 2.4GHz if you are using a 5GHz wifi network.
2. When cannot turn on:
Power on the AC adapter and remember to turn on the switch on the machine base.
3. How to down load the APP?
method 1: scan the QR code in the user manual to turn into the download page for downloading
method 2: Apple users enter APPLE store, while Android users enter Google play to search "PETWANT" for installation.
4. When reconnecting failed once lost wifi:
If the smart phone cannot reconnect, try to use 4G network to reconnect instead of wifi.
If the feeder cannot reconnect, just need to log in your account again on APP.
5. Can I connect my smart phone to multiple feeders at the same time?
No. One smart phone can only bind to one account/feeder at a time. If you have more than one feeder, then you’ll have to register a different account for each feeder, and you’ll have to logout from one account so that to login to another account.

Consider this an honest evaluation. I am including pictures and even a video walk-through.
The GemPet SmartFeeer arrived well packaged. As I removed it from its box, I was quite pleased to find that the feeder was well wrapped and its accessories put in its own cardboard casing. I was also very pleased to see that the feeder itself is well constructed. It basically comes in two pieces, the feeder/hopper and the dispensing tray. The dispensing tray easily slides and snaps into place with a nice reassuring "click." I put the feeder into place on my kitchen floor and plugged it in.
Next step was downloading the Petwant app from the iOS app store. The app is completely free. It is also available for Android.
Included with the SmartFeeder is a small booklet that serves as a "quick-start" guide. I must commend the company for making the guide extremely easy to follow. I know this product is made overseas, and ever so often when ordering such products, I have to deal with poorly translated instructions. That is not the case here. In fact, the instructions come with illustrations that essentially anybody with any level of tech experience can easily follow.
To initially set this device up, you have to pair it to your WiFi network. The app is absolutely essential for this process. If you don't have a smartphone or tablet, you may be out of luck as I don't believe that this can be done via the product's website. So be warned!
Once you start the smartphone/tablet app, it walks you through the WiFi pairing process. What you need to do is connect to the device's own WiFi hotspot. The app will instruct you how to do this, but basically, you just go to your phone/tablet settings and select the device's WiFi name. Once it connects to that hotspot, it will then reconnect you to your home's WifI. This rather strange setup only helps to ensure a secure connection and the ability for you to connect to the SmartFeeder wherever you may be in or outside of your home.
Once connected, you press a button beneath the top hood to release it, and then pour your favorite dry pet food into the hopper. The hopper is capable of holding 4.3 liters of food which is roughly 1.14 gallons. Certainly enough food to last...oh....at least a month, I would estimate.
Through the app, you can create a personal profile for your pet. You can indicate its breed, age, weight and overall characteristics (active, lazy, etc.). I am not quite certain why the app asks for all this information as it certainly doesn't seem to make any feeding recommendations based upon what is inputed. However, I suppose for personal records, it serves a purpose.
You can add individual feeding schedules by clicking on the + sign. You can indicate the time of day you want the food dispensed and the portion amount. I would suspect for the first few days, most people will be playing with the portion controls just to be certain it's "just right." You can record your voice to call for your pet as the food is dispensed. You can also take pictures or video at the time of feeding.
Being that this is an overseas product, all the programming is in metric and military time. This makes things initially difficult for American consumers who have to convert measurements and time when settings up a feeding schedule. To date, I have not found anything in settings that converts everything to U.S. standards. Is this a huge concern? No, but the company should address this issue with future firmware updates. I know that firmware updates are regularly applied, as my app walked me through such an update when I first installed it. So, at least the company is pushing software updates to make the feeder better all the time
And, yes absolutely, you can access and monitor this feeder from anywhere inside and outside of your home. From work, I can log into the app and see a wide-angle video feed. If I want to call my pet to see that he/she is okay, I can simply do that by pressing on the app's microphone button. If I want to suddenly change the feeding schedule remotely, I can do that as well. From what I understand, it will take at least 3 minutes for any changes to be registered to the server. So, any feeding changes you make, do it for 3 minutes later than the present.
The app keeps a record of number of feedings and portions, as well as telling you, at a glance, when the next feeding is scheduled for. You can even initiate a manual feeding outside of the normal schedule.
I have been using this feeder for the past three days and it has worked flawlessly without a hitch. Additionally, it never randomly disconnected from my network as other WiFi devices like these sometimes do. So, I am very confident that once connected, it will stay connected.
Thus far, I have posted a very favorable review, which this product truly deserves. However, there are a few minor drawbacks -- some of which I just previously discussed -- that you should be aware of...
First and most importantly, is the price and the apparent deals that this company is making with purchasers. This product, at the time of this review, has historically sold anywhere between $170-$190. That's very expensive for this type of gadget. It seems the company is also aware that they are overpricing this feeder, as they include a coupon inside the package that gives purchasers an extra percentage refund if they write an Amazon review. One reviewer stated he got a 10% coupon. A 30% coupon was included with mine. I can't even assure that any of you contemplating the purchase of this product will receive a coupon at all.
Next, as I pointed out, all the conversions are done in metric and military time. For U.S. customers, this will take a little bit of time to get accustomed to, but as I already stated in my review, this is not a major deal.
The microphone acts more like a "walkie talkie" than a real 2-way communication device. So you can't talk and listen at the same time. Again, that should not be a deal breaker.
The app is well designed, but just comes short of being truly intuitive. I am hoping the company makes some upgrades to allow the input you provide about your pet to suggest food portions.
If you take away the price and conversion problems, in all, this is a 5-star product. It is well built. It is easy to connect to your WiFi. You can absolutely access your feeder from anywhere you may be in the world. The video, camera and audio quality is exceptional (no night vision).
I think this GemPet SmartFeeder serves the needs for those that travel and want to be certain their pet is accurately fed while away. It also is great for those who want to put their pet on a strict diet. No more simply pouring food into a dish and allowing the pet to have access to all it wants during the day. This feeder serves portions that are under your control.
The version I tried does not come with the camera or mic.
To review this item you have compare the feeder and app that controls it.
The feeder is great.
=Lots of storage. It holds a LOT of food. It emptied out my whole bag. That's great because we're just having this big annoying bat of cat food around we have to double bag or the cats try to chew their way into it.
=Cord was long enough to reach. It could be longer, for sure.
=Hooks together and comes apart pretty easy. Should be easy to clean.
=Bowl at the bottom is big enough for my cats. I haven't tried dogs.
=Feeder often puts the food right at the end of the shoot and it gets blocked and then won't drop more food. But if you wait (hours) until the cats eat it away, then it will then drop more food. So it's not failing but you have to monitor the feed error messages and keep trying or just shake the bottom landing pad/dish to free it up.
=Doesn't let you convert time to 12 hour time in the app
=The on/off switch is UNDER it. I didn't notice that. I
=Lid is locked closed unless you push the release button, just under the lid. I didn't notice that so I kept trying to pull on it.
Now this is where you'll likely struggle. The instructions are very clear so do your best to follow them. I'll point out some issues along the way.
The app took, I swear an hour of work to set up. It's not easy.
Android Instructions. Get out your bar reader app and scan the QR code. Then click on the link. The mobile version of the web site is pretty clear as to what to do next. At the end, you'll get this .apk file (android) to download and install. It's NOT on the play store as you might expect. The app permissions are pretty invasion and certainly cause question as to why it needs access. I believe that's because it wants to use the camera/mic but if you don't have that version, the app wouldn't need that.
After you get the app installed, that's where you might struggle. You need to start to create an account. It emails you a code to input. But somehow I kept sending myself codes and the previous ones would expire, etc. Eventually I got past that part. Next it wants a login/password created (or use facebook). I did run into a problem where the login button wouldn't light up. I had to restart the app several times and click on my email address and remove an extra space at the end to get the button to light up. So make sure you don't have any trailing spaces.
Once you manage to log in, you try to find/learn your device. Another problem I experienced was that it doesn't give you a list of wifi to connect to. Instead it just picks one and suggests you connect to it. My router has a 2g and a 5g account. It will NOT connect to the 5g. That's probably where most poeple are unable to connect/use the app. What you have to do is close it down/restart until the 2g option appear. Then log in, and then it should work after that.
Now it pops up a window about the device. The serial is filled in automatically. The next option is a password listed in your manual. The final thing is it wants you to name the thing. But it wouldn't work until I made a CRAZY long name. CatFeederrrrrrrrrr. Then it worked ok.
After all that, everything worked fine. There were a lot of times in the app where buttons wouldn't light up or it wasn't clear what the error was in the text input. It would be awesome if they updated the app to remove those issues. Make sure you click the REMEMBER PASSWORD box.
So now you're finally all set up. It does put the times in 24 hour format. I wish I could switch to a 12 hour format because I hate 24 hour time. I was able to set up a feeding, and my cats came running. It says PLAY AUDIO option. I turned it on but I've yet to hear whatever audio that it's trying to play. The sound of the food hitting the dish is enough to have the cats come running. My black cat has hit it 3-4 times already.
Portions: you can set what portions you want. I was surprised to see how little came out at 1-2 portions so you might need to crank it to max or add more feedings if you have multiple cats.
It's fine so far. I'm excited about it. If you can slug through the app setup process, this thing could be pretty cool. I'm going to keep changing the feed times and see if I can get my black cat to not eat 24/7 as with my old dish. haha.
Used it month + no major problems. It's made feeding so much easier and stores a lot of the food that I don't have to dish out anymore.
