Technical Details

Product Description

The GRIGRI 2 belay device with assisted braking capability is designed to facilitate belay maneuvers. The GRIGRI 2 works equally well for lead climbing and top-roping. It may be used on all single dynamic 8.9 to 11 mm ropes on the market (optimized for 9.4 mm to 10.3 mm ropes). Both compact and ultra-light, the GRIGRI 2 will accompany you on climbs around the world for many years. The GRIGRI 2 has a new design that allows excellent control during the descent. Belay technique identical to classic belay systems: both hands on the rope. A fall is stopped by tightening the hand on the free end of the rope. Assisted braking: during fall arrest, the belayer holds the free end of the rope, the cam pivots and pinches the rope, increasing the braking action until the rope stops sliding. The GRIGRI 2 has a new design that allows excellent control during the descent. One hand holds the rope and the other uses the handle to unlock the cam. The patented handle design allows a very gradual release of the rope. In combination with the strong braking action of the cam, it gives a great feeling of security when lowering a partner or rappelling. The GRIGRI 2 is compact and ultra-light at 185 g (25 % smaller and 20 % lighter than the GRIGRI). Built with a stainless steel friction plate and cam to ensure a long life for the product. For 8.9 to 11 mm single ropes (optimized for 9.4 mm to 10.3 mm ropes).

If you are looking at this product, you already know what it does and how well it works, so I'm not going to discuss that. I just wanted to mention that the dvd that comes with it has NOTHING to do with the Gri Gri, for some reason I thought it would be an instructional video. Not a big deal, just an FYI.

The grigri serves its purpose, good auto-locking and very convenient for belaying ropes below 10mm. However, I had mine for 2 weeks and used it about 4 times during this period, and I am already beginning to see rust on the circular areas that acts as a joint between the moving parts. It is surprising even though people are saying the cinch actually rusts while the grigri shouldn't, but I don't know if this is the real stuff since it shows evidence of rusting so quickly, even though it appears as small specks of reddish brown.

It’s very nice. I had a problem figuring out how to give slack to the climber without letting go of the rope with my breaking hand. The video that came with the device has nothing to do with the use of the device; it is just some interesting climbing movie. Bottom line, with all the written instructions that came with the device I still have problem figuring out the optimum direction or rigging it to the harness making sure that my strong hand is on the break side and giving slack without letting go of the break hand to press down on the handle so it doesn’t lock.
