Top customer reviews
Petzl in general has excellent product standards throughout the the line, from low to high. I like that the packaging is easy to separate for recycling; it shows thought in the details.
The downside is that the red light is not bright enough to be useful to me. I can barely tell that it's on, and it doesn't illuminate my path enough to add safety. I ended up going back to the white light. It is also annoying to cycle through the light modes. Not intuitive at all. You must fiddle through the right combination of short clicks, long clicks, double and triple clicks before finding a suitable light. It's like having to learn morse code. The manual is not helpful because it attempts to illustrate the clicks in drawings only, avoiding the trouble of having to translate text. The result is that the manual is like trying to decipher cave drawings.
There is also a short burst mode, which provides a wonderful strong light for ten seconds and then turns off, leaving you in virtual darkness. Haven't figured out the purpose of this, and I hate accidentally going into this mode.
So, lots of points for the form factor, which is a nice hunk of plastic and a comfortable band. I just wish the software was more resolved.
On the other hand, I like that it starts in the dimmest setting, unlike others that start off super-bright. The brighter modes are plenty-bright, and it's easy to use, just keep clicking through to get to the brightness you want. If you click after the brightest mode, it turns off. Easy stuff.
My wife has had problems using this, because our other Petzl headlamp you just click to turn on, so she keeps getting it in the wrong mode. Yesterday she swore she got this one to flash alternating the red and white light. I haven't seen that though.
I don't understand how none of the previous reviews mentioned how the light itself will not stay in place with movement. It is built so that you can angle the light downward, but it is to loosely constructed and mine always flops up and down as I walk.
The light itself works great. Bad plastic construction.
I expected more from petzl.
Now, why I bought it again:
1) The light beam is strong enough
2) The new price is low: 23$
3) This is a flaw that turns into an advantage. You need to learn a kind of Morse code to run this simple flashlight. So once you master it, you stay with it!
