This is a great resource. The price has dropped to a very reasonable $60. It was around $200 when I bought it a couple years ago.
If the intent of the 'book-in-a-box-design' was for users to handle the cards, resort them, hang them up, and so on - then they should have been printed on durable stock that could withstand such handling.
I've already dinged the edges of some of the cards - and I've been very gentle.
I hate to give a bad review, but I agree with the other person who pointed out that for the price, it would have been nice for the cards to have been heavier or even laminated.
The information is great - but if I would have known about the flimsy cardstock, I would not have purchased this item.
The Phaidon Archive of Graphic Design
The description didn't prepare me for the delight of opening this box of wonders.
It's parked next to my desk. I randomly select one of the loose sheets, prop it where I can see it, and am inspired.
Sometimes the page elicits a nostalgic response along with an appreciation of the graphic design being highlighted (Seventeen Magazine, Rolling Stone).
Other pages are history lessons, philosophical treatises, a skip across the ocean. Each one takes only moments to read but invites further contemplation.
It ain't cheap. It is certainly not a necessity for most people.
But if you are a junkie for graphics, it's the $#!+.
The work showcased in the box is really wonderful - I am looking forward to reading through all of the cards. I especially like the sections on Typography, Identity, and Logos. Not all sections are equal...in fact I wish there was a bit more attention to the balance. I work in package design and was disappointed that there were barely any examples of packaging...for future additions they should really beef up that category as well as film graphics. It was great to see a category on Information Design though. I recommend this product.
This case contains a huge amount of information organized in such a way that everyone who needs or intends to be better informed about the practice of visual design through time will be totally satisfied.
It is not a book, it is a case with cards containing a big picture on one side and its context on the other side, with a commentary.
So, it certainly will not work for beginners.
It is really a tool for studying and teaching, a wonderful one. One can pick up some of those cards in a way to demonstrate a point of view or a series of design procedures.
