This is an entertaining part of the library Lucian was a public speaker and would make a living writing and giving speeches on a variety of topics. Wile not a philosopher himself, he did write a lot about them. His story The Carousal about a group of philosophers that meet together at a wedding dinner party make the book worth it alone. A lot of humor does not age all that well This it a definite exception. It's one of the funniest things I've read recently. I highly recommend this book for anyone with an interest in classical literature or Greek philosophy .

I have bought the whole eight volume set of Lucian on the strength of a few stories I had read online, and I have not been disappointed. He takes aparts some of the givens of his age and previous ages in a style of easy satire. He debunks some philosophers and poets in a very amusing way. I had to laugh out loud. In the first volume, in the story 'Amber, or The Swans,' Lucian embarks on a journey to foreign lands and comes to a place he had heard poets speak about. Finding the place nothing like he was told he admonishes himself for believing the lies of poets. The locals laugh at him and wonder at the lies told about their country. He brings the story back to himself saying that people who may have heard highly of him, and have come to hear him talk, might be disappointed in the reality. I am no Greek scholar, just a guy who loves to read rapaciously. I enjoyed the English text and would recommend Lucian in the Loeb (love my Loebs) to any casual reader who likes ancient Greek writing. The smaller stories make for very easy rewarding reading.

Good humor transcends time and place and Lucian has it!! Lucian is a great mind penetrating deep into the human soul and exposing its weaknesses through the avenue of satire and cynicism. He makes for an easy reading through his simple language and a good laugh at any time. Highly recommended!!!
