The orginal George Wilson covers are all being enlarged for the new covers. If the project has one fault, it is the cover reproduction which seems dull and washed out compared to the orginal vibrant colors. This is something Hermes Press needs to correct because it was one of the major selling points for me.
This first novel is one of the four written by Phantom creator Lee Falk. While Mr Falk really wanted to write them all, they came out one every month or two, which prevented Falk from doing it since he was still writing both the daily and Sunday strips also.
While this first effort is listed as a novel it is really a loosely strung together series of short stories. Kind of like Burroughs "The Jungle Tales Of Tarzan " book.
If you have read most of the Phantom newspaper strips some of this material will be very familiar while other parts will be all new. Some of the early material has a toddler Kit Walker (the 21st Phantom) exploring the Skull Cave.
The storyline bogs down a bit as we get sidetracked telling stories of the other previous Phantoms.
Finally the story picks up as a 12 year old Kit Walker and a 22 Guran ( the Pygmy prince) travel to America for Kit's American Education. Lee Falk retcons his own stories as The Phantom meets Diane Palmer twice when he is just 12 years old. Later they meet again as he starts college.
True fans of the Phantom need to own and read these books. The series gets my Highest Recommendation
