Format: Hardcover
Written by a textile specialist, this is an excellent guide to Pharaonic Egyptian clothing. The book deals with the construction of items, based on surviving material (cloths, dresses, headgear, aprons, straps). Well illustrated in black and white, a glossary explains the terms found throughout the book, and a bibliography for further reading is also provided. Highly recommended for those with an interest in clothing and Ancient Egyptian society.

This is the full volume of Gilian Vogelsang-Eastwood’s study on Egyptian textiles and clothing. It is very detailed and comprehensive, and certainly it is the definitive work on the topic. It is absolutely fascinating with much information and many illustrations. The author is an expert in all areas of textile production and clothing manufacture in Ancient Egypt, although her range is much wider than just ancient Egypt and she has several other excellent publications to her credit.

This a stand-alone volume in the series on Textile and Costume History published by Brill.

Those who have a more limited interested in Egyptian clothing might be interested in some of her more general (and less expensive) publications on Egyptian clothing, such as “Patterns for Egyptian Clothing.”

This book is absolutely indispensable for all who are truly interested in what life was like in ancient Egypt. Learning things like how garment pieces are put together and how they are cared for often tells us more about what life was really like than do the idealized pictures created by Egyptian artists.
