Editorial Reviews
With Pharoah Sanders' blessing, this limited edition 2 LP box set presents the definitive, remastered version of PHAROAH, his seminal record from 1977, along with two previously unreleased live performances of his masterpiece "Harvest Time." PHAROAH will be released a year after the legendary tenor saxophonists' untimely death, and two years after the release of what was to become his final album, the widely acclaimed PROMISES, a collaboration between the composer Floating Points and Pharoah Sanders, featuring the London Symphony Orchestra.

Packaging wise, Luaka Bop did an outstanding job. The two LPs are accompanied by a promotional photo, a contact sheet, a concert-poster reproduction, a Daily News review, Harvest Time's sheet music, snapshot photos of Pharoah and his wife Bedria (who played the harmonium beautifully on Harvest Time), a ticket reproduction and a large booklet packed with recording information, interviews and pictures. This box set serves as both a fitting tribute to an overlooked album ripe for rediscovery, and a reminder of the massive void this uncompromising jazz giant left behind.

The records play and sound great.
I'm just not a fan of all the chotchkies packed in the box and feel like the set could have been 10 or 15 less dollars if it was just the albums and booklet.
Minor complaint really. Still worth the asking price. If you are a person that enjoys ephemera, also know, the supplemental goodies are very high quality. But for me, that stuff will probably just end up in my closet. What am I supposed to do with this stuff?
Original LPs go for $300 to $1500, so buying this reissue is a bargain - get it before it goes out of print.
The pressing is very clean and quiet.
The additional live album is ok, it will not overshadow the original recording, neither does the b-side, which is good if you're in the mood, but is a very different vibe than Harvest Time.
About the packaging:
The boxset comes with a whole bunch of reproductions of artifacts that are nice for a minute but certainly not essential. I assume the idea is to turn this into a collectable "thing" to entice people to buy it instead of downloading it somewhere for free.
The design on the outer box is embossed, which is a nice, subtle touch.
The cover of the "Pharoah" lp is a gatefold, unlike the original, and is printed on a matte, slightly textured paper stock which feels very nice.
The booklet and the 2nd LP use glossy paper that feels cheaper, wish they had used the same textured paper for everything, which would have made the whole thing feel more special. But these are not even minor gripes, just observations.
Buy this for the first LP, and look at all the additional stuff as a pleasant, if not crucial bonus. Get it while you can.

Now some of you may have heard music by Mr. Sanders which is, shall we say, on the ‘shronky’ side, with blaring saxophone seemingly unrelated to the music playing alongside. Not the case here, as he was in a transition between his early 70s free jazz and late 70s and 80s jazz-soul. His playing is precise, clear and melismatic.
The records are presented in reproduction sleeves, ‘Pharaoh’ features an embossed textile gatefold sleeve. The heavy disks sound great to me, but the music hasn’t been remixed - the drums are right back in the mix, but I guess they wanted it that way. There is a sizeable booklet and some interesting memorabilia included, all in all a generous package.
I’m so glad that Pharoah was convinced to endorse this release shortly before he died. It was a notoriously rare record, I’m glad that so many more of us can now enjoy it.
Del álbum decir solo que es una maravilla de Pharoah Sanders, esencial diría yo. Todo esto bajo la supervisión del propio músico que desgraciadamente no llegó a ver el resultado. Es sin duda su último regalo
I eventually decided I didn’t want to miss out - and am so glad I made that decision to purchase this Luaka Bop box set.
Not only is the music as good as as everyone says, but what I was unaware of was all the bonus items in the box. Firstly both albums (the original and a 1977 live album) come in their original gatefold sleeves (not just in white inners, as is often the case with LP box sets).
There is also a 23 page booklet, tickets from the gig (copies, natch!), a poster from the gig, and a set of photos in their own pouch (as well as other bits and bobs - see pic for details).
All told this new version is more than value for money!

Etwas teuer das Ganze aber es lohnt sich wirklich.
