Editorial Reviews

Phase II is the much awaited sophomore release by Prince Royce, and includes the radio hit single "Las Cosas Pequeñas." A second single will hit radio prior to the album street date, thus solidifying his hold on the airwaves. Prince Royce once again teams up with legendary and multiple Grammy Award winning producer Sergio George on the production and songwriting for Phase II.

Phase II is simply a terrific second album by Bronx Dominicano Prince Royce. The first taste from Phase II was the lead single "Las Cosas Pequeñas", which is classic Royce. Great bachata music with simple but meaningful lyrics, the song is a tribute to Royce's appreciation of the little things about a woman. It stays real to his roots of songs like "Corazón Sin Cara" from his first album, appreciating a woman for more than what's on the outside (or in this case, materialism). It's hands-down the best song on this new album.

That's not to say that the other canciones don't hit as hard as the singles from his first album. One of the best surprises of Phase II is "Incondicional", which begins with a serious Mexican Mariachi vibe before it's infused with traditional bachata sounds. There's even a grito thrown in, to appeal to Mexican fans of the dimpled singer. Royce also channels Maroon 5 "She Will be Loved" on the hook of "Eres Tu", another beautiful inclusion to Phase II.

One of the best songs of the new album is "Addicted", in which Royce sings in English over a Juan Luis Guerra styled acoustic guitar melody. What's great about this track is that by keeping the music simple, Royce allows his voice to really shine. The lyrics are simple, but it's a moving performance by Royce.

On the flip side of that, Spanglish Pop songs like "It's My Time" sound good, but don't give Royce the chance to really flex his vocal talents. Because Royce has an amazing voice, the audio effects simply aren't needed. Other non-traditional songs like the English "Close to You" point to the possibility of Royce one day doing a purely-English crossover album.

Another standout song on Phase II is "Dulce", which gives a nod towards strong, single mothers.

the bachad peices are pretty good, with a little innovation over the traditional rhythms. the other pop material is so insipid and cliche'd as to be cringe-worthy, especially the part where he breathes out a michael jackson-esque attempt to sound sexy whilst saying the empty "for all the single mothers out there, Prince Royce is with you"......or something to that effect, I really don't remember, that was the last straw for me, lol.

I was so excited to get Prince Royce second album that I preordered it weeks in advance. This cd is a little different from the first cd. But I love everything Prince Royce does, he's very talented and handsome.

At first I wasn't really liking it as much as the first album, BUT once you really get to listen to the album in the car or headphones you can really vibe and hear the progress and changes he's been trying to make to keep his career going. I love all but one song the album.

I've been a big fan of Prince Royce since his first disc, "Prince Royce". He still carries out the Bachata flavor throughout this album and offers other titles that are a slightly different genre(not bad though). Album has 12 complete songs minus the first track which is an intro. He also has a few songs that are mostly English yet he sticks mostly with Spanish lyrics. If your a fan of Prince Royce, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

The only thing I don't like is the constant "Royce" in each and every song. Is he insecure? Is he just reminding us of his name? Who knows... But the range of feelings in the cuts is impressive because it shows the evolution of bachata music, from soulful lament to a little confrontational to cheery upbeat themes...
And there is no mistaking the need to dance when you listen to these cuts....that'[s the best part!

I have to say this album is amazing.I was hesitent but after hearing a few songs I got it. My spanish was not very good but I enjoyed it so much that it didn't matter. I completely fell in love. I listened so much I ended up learning a lot at the same time enjoying myself. It is my favorite CD now!!!
