I jumped on this without a single review on it (trust me, I searched a lot), but the previous model (Phiaton Chord) had all around glowing reviews with one of the only major issues being the uncomfortable head strap and that it isn't around ear.
I've only head these a day, but I've been listening for hours on Bluetooth, ANC, wired, and combinations of each. Here are my preliminary thoughts, and I will update in the future:
Comfort: Fantastic. The ear pads are soft and the head band has been replaced with a rubbery cushion-type thing. Bottom line, I've worn these all day with only issues being overheated ears (as with any headphones like these)
Controls: Seem to be an update from the Chord? On the right side, we have a phone button, power button, and a little play/pause toggle thing. Pressing down the toggle pauses; holding it pauses music and feeds in outside audio (which is perfectly clear by the way). Only issues with this that I found however is that it only seems to last for 30 sec and switches back the music, wish it stayed until you toggled it back. Flicking the toggle one way increases volume (holding it up skips the song) and vice versa going the other way. I found the combined controls on the single toggle to be pretty clean and intuitive. On the left, you have the ANC on/off switch.
ANC: Compared to my roommate's QC25's, not quite there but still very good. There is a light noticeable hiss when switched on, but it's a nonissue when music starts playing. It does an amazing job cutting out droning in the room (like a heater). With talking and such, it obviously won't cut the sound entirely but does a damn good job making it MUCH quieter. Switching on/off the ANC while someone speaks in the room is night and day, really. When the music starts playing, you will notice speaking in the room but it’s quite muted relative to the music and impossible to decipher.
Audio quality: This depends on which mode you have active (Bluetooth vs wired, or ANC on vs off). I will break this up below:
To preface this, you should take every Bluetooth vs wired comparison with a grain of salt unless the reviewer knows what they’re talking about. The quality of sound depends entirely on the codec the transmitter is streaming with; almost all Windows computers and most phones will stream using SBC. In short, SBC is not very good, and compression is definitely noticeable (less so from my Nexus 5, which streams a higher bitrate SBC than my laptop). Ideally, one wants to stream from a device that supports AptX. Many phones, like Galaxies, support this. Macbooks also support AptX, but it’s unfortunately lacking on Windows (native support was added with Win10, but the laptop manufacturer still needs to license the technology from CSR to use it). I’ve currently ordered an AptX supporting Bluetooth adapter and will update this review once it comes in the mail.
As for my current experience with SBC on my phone, wireless definitely sounds a bit flatter overall and more muted than wired, but still quite good. Turning on ANC actually seems to make everything sound a bit tighter yet slightly even flatter; I prefer ANC on audio vs off however. When plugging the headphones in using the provided USB to 8mm cable, sound quality noticeably increases. Everything is overall much richer with wider range and fantastic depth, sounds gorgeous when plugged in with excellent balance. ANC on when wired is a far bigger difference than switching on when wireless, it surprisingly makes everything much clearer and pronounced, which I prefer, although it cuts on some of the depth. Sorry for my limited descriptions and vocabulary, I’m not good at this…
Again, I will update this review when I get my AptX Bluetooth adapter.
Phiaton BY 330 is very good features. BY 330 has a long battery life ( over 25 hours without noise cancellation, and 14 to 15 with noise cancellation on) great sound, very sturdy, and stylish. Did not give five stars cause these headphones press ears a bit too tight...overall, an awesome headphones. However, wired doesn't work that well..
They way they are made appears like there is no ridge or lip to even apply super glue so I guess these will be going in the trash unless I duct tape.
