After having used and enjoyed Phiaton's PS 210 BTNC earphones, I opted to go with Phiaton again in shopping for a pair of over-ear headphones. I eyed the Sennheiser Momentum for a moment, but, after reading around and doing some research, found Phiaton's Fusion MS 430 a more reasonably priced alternative. Phiaton's not as well-known as some of the larger brands such as Sennheiser and Bowers & Wilkins, but all its products over the past couple years have received stellar reviews, especially by those who can appreciate its well-sculpted, clear sound signature. Having used the Fusion for a few weeks now, I can say it merits all the positive reviews that have been penned about it. I've already recommended it to several friends, including students and professionals in both the classical and rock music industry.

Sound quality

My music preferences are pretty catholic, as they probably are for a lot of people. The playlist on my phone is dominated by late '90s/early '00s rap and classical baroque, although the Doobie Brothers have been getting heavy play of late. It's not easy to find a headphones that can handle JT Money and Boccherini with equal aplomb, but the Fusion gets as close as any.

The bass is more warm than heavy, maintaining good presence on the whole while never getting muddled even on bass-driven tracks such as UGK's Players Anthem. Sounds in the mid-range are characterized by a smooth, natural timbre. The Fusion is remarkable for its balance, and it's the mids that anchor and really round out the overall sound. The crown jewel of the entire register, though, would have to be the highs. On a playing of Hilary Hahn's recording of Bach's Partitas for Solo Violins--played at varying volume levels--they came off as clear and present but never overwhelmingly so.

Pros:
broad soundstage
very good mid-range as well as bass and treble response: bass rich, but not boomy
connects to either right or left 'phone
nice build quality, elegant look and feel

Cons:
band is unpadded and a bit tight: not comfortable for extended periods
volume control is a slider switch, making fine changes in volume difficult
pause or mute button is very small and hard to find
no controls for skipping or repeating

I have not used it during a call, so cannot comment on the mic quality.

I bought these for my husband for sound editing music. He is extremely picky insisting on very clear and distinct highs as well as true, unmuffled bass. His pickiness is also complicated by the fact that he has a very large head. I researched sound quality exhautively reading through hundreds of reviews, then researched comfortable headphones for large heads. Only two showed up on both lists and I bought both of them. This is by far his favorite. He said that this has the truest sound he has ever heard in headphones. He has used them exclusively for his music sound editing since he got them. Even though they are large, they are lightweight and the carbon fiber headband looks fragile but is anything but. The cord being detachable is a great innovation as well. These lets it pull loose at an unexpected jerk instead of damaging the fragile connection most headphones have. It also means you can replace just the cord if it does ever go bad. I would definitely recommend these to anyone who insists on dynamic sound quality and also to anyone having trouble finding headphones to fit that aren't enormous and heavy.

I was looking for a pair of on ear headphones that looked decent, had above average durability and most of all, good sound quality! After a good deal of research I eventually decided on the Phiaton Fusion MS 430. When they arrived, I was immediately impressed by the downright stupendous packaging of these headphones, you can definitely tell that some thought was put into the unboxing experience. Inside, you'll find the headphones themselves, a very sturdy feeling detachable cable with a microphone and volume controls (worked on my Nexus 5, can't vouch for iOS), and a carrying bag, that while not as good as a hard case, is very thick and will keep your headphones safe from most anything they'll come across. In terms of build quality, these things are built like a freakin man! The earpads are made of what appear to be a faux leather with aluminum rings around them, the headband is made of a mixture of heavy duty plastic on the sides and a rubber based top with 2 aluminum posts that keeps the top and sides of the headband separate, and the actual adjustable band itself is remarkably durable and is made of aluminum as well. You have the option to put the 3.5mm cable into either earcup and that allows you to be able to share music with your friends by daisy chaining another pair of headphones into the other earcup, a very nice touch.Read more ›
