The author has a wonderful knack for storytelling. I was impressed with the interesting worlds he created and described in intricate detail. What a wonderful imagination. Not only were there vampires, demons, and strange beasts, there was also a lovely romance. I really enjoyed the ending but I do hope there is a sequel in the pipeline. Read it!
"The forest seemed to pulse with life as the trees were set in a morbid dance."
"She looked into the eyes of the man who was too close for her own comfort, and her breathing stopped dead. His eyes now glowed yellow in the moonlight, his skin a deathly pallor of grey. When his lips parted, revealing massive curved canines, her bowels voided, splattering the ground between her feet. She knew what she was looking at."
I recommend this book to readers who love horror mixed with fantasy, folklore, other worlds and dimensions, spirits, beasts, and unique characters. Like I said in the beginning, this story is meaty!
The book is a little slow in the beginning because the author is laying out the characters but don't put this book down. Once you get past the first few chapters you can see them all come together and it's well worth the wait. This reader can say that she really enjoyed Unknown and looks forward to reading Phil Price's next book Turning.
There is a lot that goes on in this book, especially in the beginning. It is a little confusing and hard to piece together until you get a few chapters in. At that point, it becomes clear that there are many seemingly unrelated things that tie together. There are lots of characters and lots of points of view, but the character development is still great. The supernatural elements are well thought out, and there is plenty of intrigue, suspense, and horror.
Despite the fact that my time is so limited, I found myself thinking about this book a lot and wanting to sit down and read it. I actually read it semi-simultaneously with the second book, The Turning, and it ended up being ok! (Some spoilers but not anything too bad).
Great job, Mr. Price!
