The words Smooth Jazz now have a negative connotation thanks to a certain muddy spat on jazz Kenny G whose name I won't mention. (Did I do that? WHOOPSIE DAISY!!!!!!!)

But in the 1970s, what is now called Smooth Jazz was really slick instrumental soul. Guys like Chuck Rainy and Bernard Purdie simply created the same grooves they would for Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan Bobbie Humphry, Donald Byrd and literally 100s on 100s of others, without a strong front leader.

Along with Eric Gale, Phil Upchurch was the go to guitarist for this type of music. This master worked with Cat Stevens, Donny Hathaway, John Lee Hooker--maybe just telling you he was not in the Beatles would be quicker.

On his self titled solo album he makes excellent instrumental soul of his own compositions, and a fantastic cover of Shuggie Otis' "Strawberry Letter 23." His style is detailed and not flashy, and if you like 1970s slickness--think Bob James--with a little more substance, check this out

I am a fan of Phil Upchurch. I purchased this album a few years back on vinyl. I am glad to see it now available in CD format. The music sounds good. Mr. Upchurch's guitar playing is in excellent form. The other musicians on this album were also in top notch form. His cover of Strawberry Letter 23 is awsome, I am sure the Brother's Johnson were pleased with this version of their song. He also did a very nice cover Deneice William's "Free", and the Jackson Five's "For The Good Times". I think this is a good album and worth purchasing especially if you are a fan of Phil Upchurch. If you don't know Phil Upchurch but are into good R&B or Smooth Jazz music, you will appreciate this album.

This is a great collection of music. I purchased it new on a record album in the 1970's when it was originally released. I recently found the record in my storage and started to play and enjoy it all over again...
After listening to it a few times, I decided to search the internet to see if it is available on CD.. I am so pleased this great collection of music has been made available to enjoy and preserve on the CD format. I have placed my order.
Special songs that I recommend are:
1. You've Got Style
2. In Common
3. Ava Maria
There is also a great collection of music that Tennyson Stephens worked on with Rheta Hughes (on Columbia)... If anyone runs across that on record or CD (preferred), please post it in this media.
Regards, and happy listening...
A~
