Although there is only a smattering of profanity and just a couple of f-bombs, this is written in Adult English, in case that is important to you.
At times, the humor comes a little too close for comfort to that exhibited by Douglas Adams in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Yet, I did chuckle at several lines and found it a welcome tonic after recent world events that I found disturbing or just plain too intense. The editing seemed a little better with this than it was in the short story. At any rate, it was a more enjoyable read than was Phil!: The Beginning of the universe/ A short story.
If you've not read any of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, you would be well-advised to do so immediately. Even so, the series of Phil! books is likely to bring more than an occasional chuckle to ensure you don't take life, the universe, and everything too seriously.
Four stars out of five.
Comments regarding your opinion of this book or of my review, whether favorable or unfavorable, are always welcome. If you buy the book based on my review and become disappointed, especially, I do want to know that and I want to understand how I can improve as a book reviewer. Just please be polite.
I went into it somewhat expecting a wannabe Douglas Adams story, but what I got WAS a Douglas Adams worthy story!
I was genuinely laughing and enjoying my time with Phil (Ford?), Bill (Arthur?), Lori (Trillian?) and the rest of the very entertaining characters as they travelled to alternate earths while the evil race of absurdly fantastic-looking aliens "enslave" the universe.
I won't give away any spoilers here, but if you read the book, you'll understand why I put "enslave" in quotations...it's pretty funny.
Anyway, so as to avoid any spoilers, I will make my recommendation and justification of my 5 stars review simple.
If you love Douglas Adams' style of writing...if you love the Hitchiker's wacky universe and humor, then you owe it to yourself to buy this book.
Mr. Momsen has captured the spirit of Douglas Adams, but has injected his own personality and humor into his world and characters, and created a universe I want to return to time and time again.
I think you will too.
I hope he's hard at work on a sequel.
