The origins of this story are not science-fiction – they are science-fact. In 1943 the U.S. Office of Naval Research conducted a series of tests at the Philadelphia Naval Yard to develop a sophisticated camouflage system to make ships invisible to radar. During the final test aboard the destroyer the Battleship Eldridge, something went wrong – very wrong. This film explores beyond reality to ask the question “what if…” Two young seamen get caught in a violent tornado-like vortex and fall through a time warp to a different era – 1984. Desperately they struggle to find a way back to their own time, but their efforts become all the more vital as the rift in time threatens to suck present-day earth back to the past. Michael Pare (Streets of Fire, Eddie and the Cruisers) and Nancy Allen (Carrie, Dressed to Kill) star in this psychological sci-fi hit.

I have waited for years for this film, which is one of my all-time guilty pleasures, to show up on Blu-ray, and while it's still not available as a US release, it does exist from Germany. I have had a very mixed experience with foreign Blu-rays, especially when the film in question is an older movie, or a low budget film, because the picture quality was not that great to begin with. "The Philadelphia Experiment" was a low budget film when released, so my expectations were not high for this disc, but I wanted it anyway. I took the plunge, and am so happy that I did, because they did a great job. The film is in its original release ratio, and the footage has been remastered, so it is the best looking it could possibly be. There are not really any special features, but it is understandable, as there were never any on the American DVD. If you are a fan of this film, I recommend the German Blu-ray.

Dated but entertaining 1980s fantasy film

Based on an alleged 1943 US Navy experiment in making a ship invisible, two sailors David Herdeg and his best friend Jimmy Parker (Michael Pare and Bobby DiCiccio) are projected into 1984. They meet a struggling woman (Nancy Allen) who falls for stoic Pare (who struggles with his acting) where they meet Allison Hayes. After Parker gets ill and disappears, they later meet up with him as an old man. Jimmy refuses to see him. Kene Holiday plays a totally unbelievable and bumbling dumpy military officer in hot pursuit. The surprise is the performance by Eric Christmas, a veteran character actor who plays Dr. James Longstreet , the inventor of the invisibility machine. The movie is silly at times but it is entertaining in that 1980s way.

This is definitely a B movie. The acting is okay, but I noticed at least one flubbed line.
They don't portray the 1940s very well. One of the first things I noticed is that all the servicemen's hair is way too long and bushy. Back then they would have been clipped nearly bald. I assume they did this so the main character looked attractive enough to "modern" eighties audiences.
Luckily only a very small amount of the movie takes place in that time period.

The main character acts more like a 50s greaser than a forties sailor. I'm also pretty sure they weren't calling it "World War Two" at the time.

The special effects are pretty cheesy as you'd expect. Still, the storyline is interesting and it has a good premise.
If you like cheesy 80s flicks or cheesy time travel flicks try this one. Try making it a drinking game. How often do they plug Coca Cola?

80'S DRAMA WITH A SIDE OF TIME TRAVEL

Watching this movie now, 30 years after it was made, actually seems to add another dimension of time travel besides the plot in the movie. The hair and the cars are super noticeable. It is actually a good plot, but the acting of the main character was weak and I found myself easily distracted by the mechanics of the movie itself and the quirks of the time it was made (gas guzzlers, stand-up video games and other reminders of the disco era). There was a scene of the two leading characters pulling into a gas station and asking the guy who worked there to fill up the tank, too. If that doesn't take you back, what does? I saw another review of this movie which mentioned wooden acting by Michael Pare and I have to agree. Some actors just seem to have a way to connect with the audience so you just like them, even if they are playing the villain (you just don't like them as much). Not so much here. Take out the just below average acting, the special effects that aren't as cheesy as those from the sixties (but still a little distracting) and you have a good plot and a movie that is worth the time spent watching it when compared with the many super-cheesy alternatives.

The lead romantic characters in this film are very likable and have very believable romantic chemistry. It's worth buying the DVD or the Amazon Instant Video version just to see it once, if that is what you have to do to see it.

Although I really like this movie and have done since I first saw it in the 1980s, I am slightly disappointed with the transfer. It has as it says been remastered but not restored. Most scenes are of brilliant picture and sound quality, unfortunately a couple of scenes are not as clear as they might be. The sound track [music] is brilliant,and for that alone I would have given it five stars. Another minor quibble, on the sleeve it states in the special features an interview with Michael Pare that is not in fact on the disc. Although I did not let the fact it is not restores spoil my enjoyment I can only rate it four stars.

Like the DVD version This one I cannot understand as it is designed for a deaf person with the on screen language and in a language I do not understand, the English (original) I loved but only that, it looked good and I could understand it as it was English not German and did not have on screen language as it is something that I do not need getting in the way of a good movie?

I don't want to have to learn German just to understand what is being said.
