I am also a recent convert to Phillies fandom, so this is my favorite paragraph in the book, although there are at least a dozen that are as good:
[Writing about Richie Ashburn, from page 45]
"As far as we know, no major league team in any sport history of mankind has ever lost more games than the Phillies. Taken at face value, that's another piece of trivia that Philadelphia fans wear with a kind of ironic pride, along with the 25-year title drought, as an explanation for our comportment. Being a Philadelphia fan means being stroke-inducingly angry about four percent of the time, unabashedly exuberantly euphoric one percent of the time, and just kind of mildly peeved for the other 95 percent. Not heartbroken, but just kind of annoyed, as if you were looking forward to taking a date out for dinner at a nice restaurant, but he or she had to reschedule (not cancel altogether--tonight's just not a great night) and now instead of that juice filet, you're eating peanut better and jelly because that's the only food you have in the your house. It should be noted, though that no North American professional team has played for so long in one city under one name."
The rest of the book is similarly excellent. Enjoy.
While this book may not appeal to the generic "sports guy," I heartily recommend it to any fan of a Philly team.
