Personalize Your Home with Stylish Accent or Ambient Lighting
Philips advanced LED bulbs can enhance your home with bright, white light, while reducing your carbon footprint and your electric bill. The elegant design provides increased life when compared to a less-efficient incandescent. Philips LED lighting can improve ambience, energy-efficiency and comfort in your home while delivering performance you can count on. Switching to higher efficiency LED lighting can help reduce your electric bill, preserve our environment and create the perfect lighting for your home. With bulb shapes available in PARs, R, MR16 spots and floods, A-shapes, candles, and specialty bulbs, Philips' family of LED light bulbs offer a wide range of solutions for household applications. A simple switch can make a difference in the home and environment.
Color temperature is a measure of the light bulb's color when illuminated, and is measured in degrees Kelvin. The higher the number, the whiter, and then bluer, or cooler. The lower the number, the more yellow, or warmer the color. The whiteness of the light itself creates a mood in the lighted space.
Color is a personal preference. Select a bulb that creates the environment you desire for the application.
Reflector Light Bulbs
Reflector types provide directional illumination and are often used in recessed down lights and tracking lights. They have a soft, smooth beam and are available in spot and flood.

You'll note a split-second delay after you flick the switch, but then the lights come on at full strength. These 75-watt equivalent bulbs have a 2700 Kelvin color rating, with the result that you have a bright, but warm light. I dithered a long time between these bulbs and the 65-watt equivalent bulbs (Philips 423798 13-Watt BR30 Indoor Flood LED Light Bulb, Dimmable) but I'm glad I went with these for the kitchen.
These bulbs are quite a bit larger than the BR30 bulbs. This bulb is 5 inches in diameter (the 40 in the product description means 40 eighths of an inch, so 8x40=5 inches), whereas the BR30 is 3.75 inches in diameter (8x30=3.75). This is also a longer bulb. This one is 6.5 inches long, whereas the BR30 is 5.1 inches. If you're putting this in a can fixture, you'll want to measure to see how it will fit in your cans. For me, this bulb stuck out a little beyond the can, but the edge detailing on the bulb made it look fine.
Many states have special incentives for purchasing CFLs and LEDs, so it's worth checking prices at your local stores before buying online.
UPDATE: As of August, 2014, all the bulbs are fine and working as well as ever. My electric bills have definitely gone down since I put in these bulbs and started using LEDs in the other most-used places in the house.
I picked one of these up on a whim just to see what kind of difference LED would make. The change was so drastic that I went right back to the local big box store to pick up enough to finish the rest of the room. The room is that nice cozy warm yellow again. They also turn right on and dim like you would expect them to.
They are a little pricy, but I feel that they are worth it for color issues alone. And if they truly last 20+ years, even better.
1. Crane Power Vivid. I like this one and just ordered another dozen to see how a room full of them looks. The color of the light is a cool white compared to the conventional incandescent warm yellow. I think that I like this better, particularly for the kitchen, office, etc. I might lean toward a warmer yellow for the bedrooms, but then again I might get used to the new color of light and come to prefer it. The Crane LED light is certainly closer to a natural outdoor sunlight.
2. Philips. This is a near perfect replica of an incandescent bulb both in light color and appearance of the bulb. This is the low-risk option for people that don’t like surprises. Philips has clearly put a lot of effort into engineering a perfect match to the legacy bulb.
3. Kobi Electric. Although sold as a BR40 bulb, this did not fit the standard BR40 fixture because it has metal heat sink fins that don’t taper down as fast toward the stem as the conventional BR40 bulbs. It got stuck before I could screw it all the way into the socket. I’m glad that I experimented with just a few bulbs before buying in bulk.
Color temp perfect.
actual light coverage is a perfect flood, not a spot like competitors
Price is high but still has excellent value.
Instant on. No delay at all.
