First let me say that I'm very happy with the Hue Lux bulbs (soft white) - it is the "Hue" color bulbs I find fault with.

I do a lot of photography, so I know color, and I see color problems with my Hue bulbs. I bought one from Amazon, and believing that I must have gotten a bad bulb, went to BestBuy and bought a second, thinking that buying a second bulb from a different source I'd get a bulb from a different production run and (hopefully) one which would output the blues and greens the first bulb lacked. No such luck.

Problem One.
The primary problem I have with the Hue bulbs is that EVERY color tone has RED in it. You can't get a pure green or a pure blue. Greens at best have enough red in them that they look muddy with a yellow to orange cast to them. Glues at best have enough red in them that they have a significant violet to magenta cast to them.

"Maybe this is an optical illusion" I thought, so I took out my Canon 5D III, set the color balance to 2500K and took a dozen images at various bulb brightness settings, variations on "blue", and camera exposure settings. Wow! The histogram showed massive amounts or RED, confirming that my eyes were NOT tricking me, and that the bulbs, even when set to output blue, and putting out a lot of red.

So I ran more experiments, setting the Hue bulbs to blue, and then to green. The histograms of both Hue bulbs were virtually identical. Lots of red.

Next I tried getting the blue as blue as possible, and then getting the green as green as possible.

When trying to get pure blue there was the abundance of red in the histogram, but also a bit of green.

Philips pushed a firmware to lock out third party Zigby certified bulbs from their hub. 5 of my 12 bulbs are Cree and have worked fine, not anymore. They did not warn users and are now acting as if this is for customers benefit. Avoid Philips products, they're trying to wall them off and are now abandoning the Zigby standard and going against everything the Connected Lighting Alliance stands for, while still proudly claiming to be a member.

I bought a Hue bridge with two Lux lights and this single color bulb and Lifx original A21 bulb to see which ecosystem I wanted to blow my money on. The winner is Lifx. The Hue color bulb mated very easily with the Hue bridge...so no trouble there. The Hue app is perfectly fine. I had no trouble operating the light or picking colors and adjusting the temperature of the Hue color bulb. The issue wasn't functionality for me in picking between Lifx and Hue, it was the color reproduction of the bulbs. The Lifx is way better at blue, yellow, purple, and green. The Hue really struggled with blue. The Hue and Lifx are pretty close in their ability to do red, orange and pink. The Hue color bulb is much less bright than the Lifx. The Hue color and Lifx are both pretty good at reproducing and giving you control over white light..you can change light temperature on both, but the Lifx comes out ahead for me because it's brighter.

The overall Hue ecosystem seems more versatile than Lifx since Hue has the different types of lighting...light strips, the Iris, and the Bloom. Lifx is just a bulb, but the light, especially the color reproduction is better.

These are nice looking bulbs that come in a very sleek package. They are heavier than I expected and do not light the room up as well as a conventional energy efficient flourescent bulb. I have two in one room (about 100 sq. ft area) and without any dim the room still has shadowy sections. Overall, happy with the bulb, but at the price point I expected something better. Also some colors like the baby blue never show up, only really does seven colors (blue, purple, red, yellow, pink, orange, and green) and then the conventional warm/cool light. If I could go back I probably would go with a different brand, too expensive and not bright enough.

Coupled with some good third-party apps and things like IFTTT, these lights are fantastic. Talk about a wow factor when people see how they look and what they can do. It took me a year to get over the price of the starter kit, but I'm glad I finally took the plunge when the price dropped for a day. And now that the first generation prices have come down, it's a good time to stock up.

I downloaded numerous third-party Android apps and settled on one called "Huerray!" because it not only allows you to create "rooms" that can each be handled separately, but it also contains a lot of features that the Philips app does not. With Huerray you can create color scenes AND animations in each room. You can also set alarms, create animated moods from your scene palettes, use NFC tags to trigger colors, and even use your device's microphone to listen to music and have the lights dance to the music! It works great. I also installed a Chrome extension called Lightswitch Pro that allows me to do many of the things I can in the Huerray app using a button in my Chrome web browser.

IFTTT (If This Then Than That) is a powerful app and website that allows you change your lights based on triggers. The functionality is huge. You can set it up so your lights go off when your phone leaves your house and turn them back on when the phone comes back home. Or you can make it so the lights come on or off at certain times of the day automatically. You can even change the colors when the weather changes! I have mine set to change to a mellow blue theme when rain is detected in my town. I also have it set up so my lights flash when I get a new e-mail from certain people. IFTTT is a must-try when you get your Hue!

These lights are often expensive but oh so addictive. It will take me a while to do every room in the house because of the cost, but I can now see myself doing it. Thanks a lot, Philips. :)
