Philips Hue is your personal wireless lighting. It enables you to create and control light using your smartphone or tablet, bringing endless possibilities to help you get creative and personalize your lighting to suit your and your family's lifestyle.
In an instant, you can set the perfect tone and enhance a moment with tunable white light and a full spectrum of color. A Hue bridge is required, and the Hue A19 single pack can be used in addition to any of the Hue or Friends of Hue starter kits.
What can Hue do for you?
In the morning.
Use the timer option and turn Hue into your morning wake up call. Set your lights to gradually brighten over time, waking you up more pleasantly than an abrupt ring of an alarm – you can even create a scene from the image of a rising sun and turn Hue into your own personal sunrise.
If you're working late or out for the night, you can turn your wireless lights on or off remotely. That way you can make it look like you're home, even when you're not. You can also set your lights to come on at a set time throughout the week. You’ll never have to come back to a dark house again.
Control from your iOS, Android, and Kindle smart devices
Control your lights wirelessly from anywhere in your house. Your smart device can control any light connected to the bridge. Philips Hue is based on ZigBee, a low power, safe, and reliable technology to control your lights. The Hue system can be easily integrated with other ZigBee-based systems for additional home automation.
Choose from millions of colors
Great for creating mood lighting inside your home, Philips Hue offers millions of colors to choose from - a bright sunshine yellow to warm your soul, a romantic shade of red, or a pale leaf green color to ease you into the evening. It’s easy to save your favorite color scenes to use again and again.
Remote access when you’re away from home
Did you forget to turn your lights off before leaving home again? With Hue, that’s not a problem anymore. Simply control your lights remotely via the Hue portal, wherever in the world you might be. The Hue portal (accessible through your web browser or Hue app) also enables you to save and share lighting scenes with other Hue users.
Expand your ecosystem
Connect up to 50 Hue products to your Philips Hue bridge. Simply begin with any of the available starter kits and add on in any combination. With a tap of your finger, you can now control any connected lighting in your home.
Relive a favorite moment
With Hue, any photo on your smartphone or tablet becomes a palette to paint with light, enabling you to bring back the memories of a vacation or capture the vibrancy of a summer day. Drag the picker across a photo to select a color within the image. Once you're happy with the scene, simply save and use again.
The Philips Hue app includes four preset Light Recipes that let you change the lighting for specific needs – relax, concentrate, energize, or read. You can even customize the settings of any Light Recipe so it's tuned perfectly for you.
Create alarms and timers
Use the Hue app and compatible apps to set your Hue light to gently notify you with alarms and timers. When you receive messages, social media updates, and other communications through your smart device, Hue can notify you with a subtle pulse of colored light.

I have programmed them all using IFTTT app to follow certain rules based on weather and updates to our facebook and instagram accounts. I can also control certain lights based on a text message for when i am away. The hue app on the ipad and iphone is great and very intuitive. I have setup to have some lights in our entry hall to come on automatically when I or my wife arrive home based on geo fencing that is included in the Hue application. I have also integrated this with my WEMO controlled lights using IFTTT to turn on specific lights when motion is sensed in certain areas of our home at a specific time of day. I have also 3D Printed a stand to hold my iPad so the camera is able to see my TV and I use an app called AMBIHUE which pulls input from the camera and changes the lights to match that color so as you are watching a movie the whole room changes color to match the scene in the movie which took a bit to get used to but after about 20 minutes we felt more immersed in the movie watching experience.
The setup and install was very easy and i was up and running in no time.
I would recommend this product to everyone from the techie to the casual user as it is a very easy way to add home automation without the hard wiring that is required of most systems.
These bulbs are frosted glass with LEDs inside, I learned this when one dropped about a foot and cracked. For the money, Lexan or something more robust would have been nice. The color palette you see in the software is a lot more optimistic than what the bulbs can actually produce: trying to get a nice red & green combo for Xmas failed pretty hard on the green (very pale vs festive Xmas green). Connection between base station and front porch (~100ft) is occasionally problematic.
The software is HORRIBLE. They have this 'theme' concept which is awful, and functionality is different between platforms. I just want to pick a color, create a schedule, and let it run. I want a single configuration point accessible from all devices equally, which drives the base station appropriately, so I can do stuff like login from home and tweak things and have those tweaks persist and propagate among all devices.
Philips really needs to take the whole Hue software group behind a barn and euthanize it, and just make IFTTT integration richer.
Well, I started my HUE lighting transition over 6 months ago. I began with 3 bulbs in the living room, then expanded to the hallways, staircase, and now the bedroom. I still have one more staircase, kitchen, and possibly the bathrooms before I am done. I now have 13 of the A19 bulbs on my hub.
I am totally SOLD on these lights. It is over 6 months later and we still use various lighting "scenes" to set the mood for movies, evenings, entertaining guests, holidays, etc. They really are so much more fun than boring single color lights. For me this has been an extremely worthwhile and enjoyable investment.
What I also really like is that if you are in need of a quick standard white light you can turn on the regular wall light switch and the bulb acts like a normal white bulb. If you leave it on it will respond to the next remote "scene" input you make on your app. If you leave it off it will stay off until you activate it with the wall switch again. This is a nice flexible option for those times when you want to save power.
So if you already have a big screen hi-def TV, surround sound, blue-ray, a smart phone, etc... and you are still using plain old-fashioned white lights, why not open your color palette to millions of colors and unlimited color combinations and step up to HUE.
I gave these lights 4 starts because the App has some shortcomings. If you make custom scenes they don't update on all your devices. Also, if you buy new bulbs you have to add them to your existing scenes manually.Read more ›
