Another thing. Why is there a picture of a random guys head shot on the box? I bought a light whats this random guys picture doing taking up the entire box? Its actually kinda creepy though.
I do have to say that i gave this a 4/5 from the fact that this unit has a different remote from an older unit i had. This newer unit has a rotary nob based control, where the other unit had a more natural feeling touch based control. This one feels more cheap and was slightly less intuitive at first use.
However I may feel about the slight difference in remotes these lights are awesome. Always recommend and we use them as back drop lighting behind our entertainment center and wall mounted tvs.
However, it only gets 3 stars because the native software support for integrating lights form different sets (like multiple starter packs, and the newer Living Colors) onto a Hue bridge is extremely lacking and requires work-arounds and non-supported software from the Hue developer community.
Thankfully, that community exists or you wouldn't be able to easily mix, match, and merge sets together. Buyer beware. It's not overly complicated with basic technical skills and Internet research skills, but it's 100% not out of the box. Do your homework first to understand what integrates with what easily if you are not technical or have patience for experimentation.
The remote is awesome. A lot of people who have the app friendly devices in the same line actually sync these devices up, but they do it so they can use the remote with their other products, not this with the app. Think of it this way, you can either unlock your phone, load your app, select a color, and then relock your phone, or just grab the remote and spin to the color you want. For me, I like having both options available, but if I had to choose only one, I'd take the remote.
Thing I don't like is the small flat surface on the bottom, I'm here in LA so I fear any earthquake will knock that thing over and it will come rolling off the shelf and crashing down breaking. I put tape on the bottom in hopes of preventing that though. So do be weary it is easy to tip over. But beyond that it is well worth the cost for what it provides.
I use the lamp primarily in my bedroom and living room during the evenings. It helps create a posh lounge like ambiance. The wide array of colors to choose from is a great plus. I live in an apartment so the amount of light output suits my somewhat small living space. When I have the lamp in my master bedroom, I focus the light on one corner which gives just enough light for me to relax and fall asleep to. My home interior/décor is modern and mostly white so the lamp design fits right in and the colors show up very well.
I am highly considering on buying another one so I don’t have to keep moving the lamp from room to room.
It will work in conjunction with the philips hue [...] lights. You do not need the version of the livingcolors that has the circular remote, this oblong version works fine. There are now programs that allow you to pair this to your hue light system without the circular remote [...]
One problem with using the LC lamp with the current hue system seems to be that the blues and greens aren't quite as blue or green as they are when setting them with the LC remote. I think this is a problem with the current hue iOS app -- but not sure. I expect this will be fixed in a future update of hue.
Finally, note that there is a generation 3 of this lamp available but it seems to be only available outside the united states. I was able to find it on the amazon UK site but couldn't have it shipped to the US. If you can find it available in the states, I would love to know where from.
