From the manufacturer
Philips Hue is your personal wireless lighting. It enables you to create and control light using your smartphone or tablet, bringing endless possibilities to help you get creative and personalize your lighting to suit your and your family's lifestyle.
In an instant, you can set the perfect tone and enhance a moment with tunable white light and a full spectrum of color. A Hue bridge is required, and the Hue A19 single pack can be used in addition to any of the Hue or Friends of Hue starter kits.
What can Hue do for you?
In the morning.
Use the timer option and turn Hue into your morning wake up call. Set your lights to gradually brighten over time, waking you up more pleasantly than an abrupt ring of an alarm – you can even create a scene from the image of a rising sun and turn Hue into your own personal sunrise.
If you're working late or out for the night, you can turn your wireless lights on or off remotely. That way you can make it look like you're home, even when you're not. You can also set your lights to come on at a set time throughout the week. You’ll never have to come back to a dark house again.
Control from your iOS, Android, and Kindle smart devices
Control your lights wirelessly from anywhere in your house. Your smart device can control any light connected to the bridge. Philips Hue is based on ZigBee, a low power, safe, and reliable technology to control your lights. The Hue system can be easily integrated with other ZigBee-based systems for additional home automation.
Choose from millions of colors
Great for creating mood lighting inside your home, Philips Hue offers millions of colors to choose from - a bright sunshine yellow to warm your soul, a romantic shade of red, or a pale leaf green color to ease you into the evening. It’s easy to save your favorite color scenes to use again and again.
Remote access when you’re away from home
Did you forget to turn your lights off before leaving home again? With Hue, that’s not a problem anymore. Simply control your lights remotely via the Hue portal, wherever in the world you might be. The Hue portal (accessible through your web browser or Hue app) also enables you to save and share lighting scenes with other Hue users.
Expand your ecosystem
Connect up to 50 Hue products to your Philips Hue bridge. Simply begin with any of the available starter kits and add on in any combination. With a tap of your finger, you can now control any connected lighting in your home.
Relive a favorite moment
With Hue, any photo on your smartphone or tablet becomes a palette to paint with light, enabling you to bring back the memories of a vacation or capture the vibrancy of a summer day. Drag the picker across a photo to select a color within the image. Once you're happy with the scene, simply save and use again.
The Philips Hue app includes four preset Light Recipes that let you change the lighting for specific needs – relax, concentrate, energize, or read. You can even customize the settings of any Light Recipe so it's tuned perfectly for you.
Create alarms and timers
Use the Hue app and compatible apps to set your Hue light to gently notify you with alarms and timers. When you receive messages, social media updates, and other communications through your smart device, Hue can notify you with a subtle pulse of colored light.

Well, I started my HUE lighting transition over 6 months ago. I began with 3 bulbs in the living room, then expanded to the hallways, staircase, and now the bedroom. I still have one more staircase, kitchen, and possibly the bathrooms before I am done. I now have 13 of the A19 bulbs on my hub.
I am totally SOLD on these lights. It is over 6 months later and we still use various lighting "scenes" to set the mood for movies, evenings, entertaining guests, holidays, etc. They really are so much more fun than boring single color lights. For me this has been an extremely worthwhile and enjoyable investment.
What I also really like is that if you are in need of a quick standard white light you can turn on the regular wall light switch and the bulb acts like a normal white bulb. If you leave it on it will respond to the next remote "scene" input you make on your app. If you leave it off it will stay off until you activate it with the wall switch again. This is a nice flexible option for those times when you want to save power.
So if you already have a big screen hi-def TV, surround sound, blue-ray, a smart phone, etc... and you are still using plain old-fashioned white lights, why not open your color palette to millions of colors and unlimited color combinations and step up to HUE.
I gave these lights 4 starts because the App has some shortcomings. If you make custom scenes they don't update on all your devices. Also, if you buy new bulbs you have to add them to your existing scenes manually. They don't automatically add to your existing scenes. Not a huge issue as it is fast and easy to click on the new lights in the app and update their color/action in your desired scenes. There are a few additional Hue apps that work well. HueParty, HueFirework, and Hue Disco work well for me.
TIP: If your new bulbs don't sync to your Hue hub using the "Auto Search" option then simply type in the Serial # printed on the side of the bulb in the "Manual Search" option. I had to do this for my 6 latest bulbs for some reason... again, not a big deal. Just write the serial numbers down on a piece of paper BEFORE screwing them into the sockets so you can quickly type them into the app. Then you are ready to go.
If you think these lights are too expensive then they obviously are not worth it for you. If you are on the fence then try them out... I don't think you will regret your purchase.
Everything arrived and was packaged quite slickly. You can see why these get sold at the Apple Store.
The lightstrip was attached to the back of my flatscreen TV to light up the wall behind. Biggest trick here was figuring out how to make the strip do a 90% angle but the sticky back is pretty strong. Also note you don't really want to trim the strip short since the trimmed end is dead. The two blooms are on opposite corners of the bedroom pointing at the walls. And the A19 is currently in a lamp in one of the remaining corners.
Setup went quickly. I have an iPhone & iPad I used to control everything and once the bridge was plugged in things were located quickly. I exchanged the original A19 bulb for color differences (more on that later) and getting the new one connected was just a matter of plugging it into a socket and telling the iPhone app to look for bulbs.
Note that initially everything needs to be on the same wifi network but once you're up and running you can control the lights from outside. The Hue app will have you register for their website and once that was done I've been able to play with controlling the lights several states away.
These are fun toys and I want to get several more strips and possible another bloom or two. Expensive but that's what you're going to get for a while.
Biggest downside is the amount of light they put out. It's sufficient but never as much as I want. Keep in mine I'm generally running 100-150W bulbs previously so I tend to go for blinding amounts of light which isn't going to happen with these. Think of these more as accent lighting than direct illumination. For the bedroom I have one lamp running a 150W normal bulb in one corner that works as normal lighting. When I want to use the Hue bulbs I turn that off and use the app to turn on the other lights. When turned to red and blue colors it fills the room with plenty of light.
Right now the lights need another device (iOS, Android, ect) to turn them on or off but there's a Hue Tap switch being released in the next 6 ish months which will remove this restriction. I'm itching to be able to pre order one.
Also IO8 has announced a feature where Hue bulbs and others will be able to be controlled natively from IOS so there's that to look forward to also.
I initially returned the A19 bulb I bought after I was playing with the lights through the iPhone app and I noticed a difference in the colors produced by the blooms and the A19. Red (which is the most use color for me) is identical but playing around in the green / blue / violet spectrum they were clearly producing different colors. I've now tried a second bulb and after looking at some videos online decided this is just a hardware thing (if not I'd love to hear about it) It's an annoyance but not a deal breaker. It really isn't noticeable if you're using the various scene settings the app gives you and if you do want a particular blue you can adjust all the lights independently and save a preset.
My plan from here is to replace that A19 with another bloom and buy several more lightstrips.

But why can't they fix the app? The new version is even worse than the first.Read more
