Over the years, I have also tried several Philips Satinelle epilators. I'm not really a fan of the Satinelle line, or this particular epilator. The primary reasons are that the head of this Philips Satinelle Essential is not wide enough, and there are not enough tweezers to effectively and efficiently remove hairs from the legs. This epilator would probably work best on smaller areas (like under arms).
The Panasonic has 60 tweezers and the Emjoi Emagine has 72 tweezers, which is significantly more than this Philips Satinelle. The Panasonic also offers the option of using either the larger or small head (which is a bonus). As far as using/maneuverability, the Panasonic moves all around like a Dyson ball vacuum versus the Emjoi Emagine (and this Philips Satinelle), which does not move as freely. The Panasonic also has a small light, which the Emjoi and this Philips Satinelle is lacking.
This Philips Satinelle also easily catches skin in the device (similar to the Panasonic) much easier than the Emagine (which hurts, and damages the skin). You HAVE to really hold loose skin tight (especially skin behind the knees and along the underwear line at the legs) or this device will eat it.
For those who have never epilated, the first time or two takes a long time ... WAY longer than shaving. You have to go over the same spots multiple times to get all of the hair removed. And since hairs grow in at different rates, you will need to epilate more frequently initially. Here are some additional suggestions to make your epilation go smoothly (no pun intended).
1. NEVER use the epilator on wet (or sweaty) skin, or in the shower. It's easier and faster to remove hair from dry skin. (Even if one of the features is that it can be used in the shower.)
2. Epilate BEFORE you take a shower or bath. Again, it’s easier and faster to remove hair from dry skin than from moist skin.
3. For the first time, let your hairs grow out to the point that it would be unacceptable to wear shorts with leg hair that long. While removing longer hair is slightly more painful, it is easier and faster (especially the first time).
4. Take an Advil or Tylenol before you epilate, if this is your first time. If it becomes too painful, don’t do it all at one time. Do some in the morning and then some in the evening, or the following day. If dividing it up, I recommend doing the lower legs (shins and/or calves) of both legs first. The upper legs (thighs) are a little more sensitive/painful to remove hair from.
5. After you’re done epilating, take a shower and use Olay body wash on a scrubber/exfoliating wash cloth. Use moisturizer on your skin after you get out of the shower.
6. Do not epilate the night before or same day that you need your legs to look their best. Pulling hair out leave LOTS of red marks all over your legs (kind of like you were attacked with an ice pick). And depending on your skin type, this can look REALLY bad. I personally found it best to first start epilating in the fall/winter. If you plan to start in the spring/summer, then just plan accordingly.
7. Use a small flashlight to help highlight hairs so you don't miss a patch.
8. Hold loose skin tight so that it does not get caught in the device (especially skin behind the knees and at the underwear line on the legs).
9. Give it a few times before you decide epilating isn’t for you. And, yes, the epilator you use makes ALL of the difference.
If you are scared to somehow mess it up and hurt yourself, I would first recommend read the instructions carefully and follow them. Secondly, below I describe exactly what I did, step by step, so that you may know what worked for me. Also, I have attached a picture of my underarm the morning after I had used the epilator.
1) Plan to shower at night, as it makes everything easier (You'll see why later).
2) rinse the head of the epilator when you take it out of the package, and let it dry completely before you use it.
3) while the head of the epilator dries, read the instructions and safety warnings.
4) Shower - clean and exfoliate very carefully the areas you plan on using the epilator on.
5) No lotion - I usually put on lotion after I shower, but this time, I limited myself to putting on lotion only in the areas I was not using the epilator on. The areas I was going to epilate, I simply dried.
6) When you are ready, placed the dry head on the epilator and plug it in. Turn it on.
7) lightly grace the epilator over your skin. It will be uncomfortable as your hairs are being pulled out, but try to go as slowly as possible to avoid accidentally cutting hairs instead of pulling them out.
8) Go against the direction in which your hair grows. Some comments here say to go in the direction of hair growth, but the instructions that came with the epilator say otherwise.
9) after you are done using the epilator, or whenever you deem it necessary, turn it off and use the provided brush to brush off hair off the epilator's head. When finished using the epilator, rinse it under cold water again and let it dry completely before storing it.
10) Once you are done, if your skin hurts/burns, lightly press a damp washcloth on it (preferably cold).
11) apply unscented lotion to the area you just epilated, and massage the area.
12) if you do this at night and you epilated your underarms, go to sleep without applying deodorant. Let the skin breathe overnight. You will notice red spots show up after you epilate, but they will go away by morning (see picture attached).
13) When morning comes, assess the state of your skin and do whatever you think best for your well-being as long as it doesn't go against the safety instructions the epilator came with.
I know it is scary, but if you take a deep breath and follow the instructions, everything will be fine. I am really excited to have less and less hair as time goes by!

Overall, it will hurt, especially the first time around. “Beauty is pain”. It either deal with the pain of have hair and I chose the the former. If you have lighter, shorter hair, it will not hurt nearly as much. Also if your skin is moisturized, it’s less painful.
