Experience with electric shavers
I have tried an electric shaver earlier in my life, but was young and gave up too easily before the 3 weeks provided by manufacturer for the skin to get used to the razor. This was mostly due to over consumption of beer and not reading the manual. Now that I am older, and can put in the time to read the instructions, decided to give the product the full 3 weeks. Using a double edged razor made the transition a lot easier as it took about a week before the my skin adjusted to this razor. No more pulling or redness.
The Shave -
I was pretty alarmed when I did my first shave as there were spots were the shaver missed, and my face looked like a deforestation attempt gone wrong. After a week however the shaves became really good. So good in fact that it was close to a shave using the gillette fusion blade. The astounding part happened when I used shaving cream, and tried wet shaving. The shave was as close as shaving using a double edged razor. My skin was smooth as the proverbial babies butt.
Dry/Wet
A couple of things really make this shaver work wonders. A good pre electric shaver lotion like the Williams electric or Afta pre shave lotion work really well if you are dry shaving. It has taken me a couple of minutes to get a great shave when shaving dry during the beginning of the day.
For a thorough shave with closeness like a double edged blade, you do need to wet shave with a shaving cream or gel, preferably with hot water. Do not want to recommend a particular cream as I have tried different creams and the shaver performed well with all of them.
Cleaning
This part is real easy. just pop off the shaving head and rinse it under water after your shave. I do it after every shave and let it air dry. Keeps the blades nice and clean. Close to a year and no sign of the blades fading out me with shaving almost every day. I do one additional cleaning every weekend. Just toss it into a water bath. You can use your soap dish as a soaking device. After a couple of minutes of soaking you can remove it and rinse it. I feel water does the job well. I have not used the solution that they sell for cleaning and hence cannot review it.
Travel
If there is one thing that is wrong with this particular model, it is the charging station. Granted it does fold down to a smaller size, but you need to carry that extra piece with you when you travel as the shaver needs the station for charging. I however don't think it is a big enough issue for me to dock a star down on the review. If you are person who travels often over multiple weeks (see charging section below) then look for a different model.
Charge
I charge it at the end of the week and the charge seems to be good for the whole week. Your mileage may vary depending on the time you use for shaving. My averages are about 2-5 minutes/shave.
Recommendation
100% buy if you are on the fence for a electric shaver. This is a great model for getting yourself accustomed to the world of electric shavers without breaking the bank. Great product by phillips. You have a customer for life.
- AT810, which was the cheapest model that allowed wet/dry shaving.
- AT830, which simply added a head that pivots in one direction.
- 1150x (this razor), which has a head that pivots in all directions.
I bought the 1150x because I wanted to try the pivoting head, and there was only a $5 difference between it and the AT830. Also, since I plan on using this shaver for the next 10 years, I figured I could splurge a bit. The only downside to this choice is the fact that the replacement blades for the 1150x are $5 more than the AT810/AT830, so if cost is absolutely essential, go with the cheaper model.
Now, on to comparisons with my last razor. First, the improvements:
- Quality/Speed of shave - This is better in every way. I haven't tried shaving with lotion yet, but the dry shaving is faster, less irritating, and gives a closer shave. There's still a small amount of irritation when shaving my neck, but it's a lot better than before. Granted, this is compared to a 10 year old razor with at least 3 year old blades, but the improvement is still welcome. Unfortunately, I can't tell what portion of the improvements come from the heads versus the tilt, so this may not help you decided between the Sensotouch line and the Powertouch/Aquaatec lines.
- Noise - the new razor is a bit quieter than my old razor.
- Cleaning - The ability to rinse it out rather than brush it out is huge. I wouldn't buy an electric razor without this feature.
- Charge time - 40 minutes instead of 30 minutes is a small but nice improvement.
Second, the downsides:
- Have to charge it in the stand - You can't just plug the razor in any more. This is probably due to the water proofing, but it's still annoying to have to get out the stand instead of a simple cord to charge the razor.
- Can't run it while plugged in - My old razor let me run it corded if I forgot to charge it. The new one does have a quick-charge feature, but I'll still have to wait a few minutes before shaving.
- The trimmer is a separate (included) attachment - you have to pop off the normal head and attach the trimmer, then switch it back when done. The Aquatec/Powertouch razors don't have this problem.
- Less portable - due to the stand and the trimmer attachment, this razor will be harder to travel with. Plus, it doesn't come with a traveling case.
- More expensive replacement cords - I lost my power cord several times while traveling with my old razor, but the cords were cheap to replace. The new cord is a bit more complicated, and a replacement stand would cost almost $30.
All that said, I still really like the 1150x. The quality of the shave is the most important part, and so far I've been really happy with that. Most of the negatives are related to the charging, and I think that's a fair trade for being able to easily clean it and shave wet if desired.
For another take, the site that gave me the most help was paupersdime; they have a comparison of all the current Norelco/Braun models that was extremely helpful.
