Decent Product with Fatal Flaw

I have owned the Philips Norelco Bodygroom Shaver for approximately six years. I use it as an adjunct to a regular hair trimmer to provide a closer cut. Certainly the motor is not as strong as a regular hair trimmer. However, the advantages include a closer cut and less potential for damage in those "tender" areas. With a non-replaceable battery, I guess it's also a positive that it still takes a charge after six years.

So, what's the problem? The method of attaching the foil head to the groomer, does not work long term. After a few dozen uses it began falling out occasionally. Subsequently, it began falling out several times with each use. When it almost never stayed in I replaced the foil. Unfortunately, that did zero to resolve the problem. It still works, but it is frustrating to use and I would not purchase another unless this problem is rectified by the manufacturer. It seems clear to me that the large number of four and five star reviews are by people who have only used the Bodygroom Shaver a few times, before this problem becomes apparent.

I've been using the BodyGroomer for several months now and I just started using the ManGroomer. Here's my review of both:

Construction:

The BodyGroomer feels like a well-made shaver and has a well thought-out design. It's submergible and rechargeable and has a removable blade. Cleaning the BodyGroomer is easy because it can be rinsed directly under water. The recharge circuit isn't automatic and Philips recommends removing it from it's cradle after recharging (not a realistic expectation). The BodyGroomer uses an interesting "combination" blade with a trimmer on each side of a foil shaver.

The ManGroomer doesn't feel like it's nearly as well made, but it's sturdy enough to do the job well. It uses two AA batteries that are easy to replace. The ManGroomer is not submergible.The head is similar to a sideburn trimmer and the blade is not removable.

Operation:

The ManGroomer is a "one-trick pony" and it does it's job well, allowing you to shave your entire back yourself. The blade isn't comfortable on the skin, especially on the sides of the back. It's most effectively used in a back and forth motion. The shave wasn't especially close. Cleaning the ManGroomer isn't easy as it's non-submergible, so think damp sponge, towel and blade brush (not included).

The BodyGroomer is much more comfortable on the skin with it's "combination blade" giving a closer and smoother shave. It's also best used in a back and forth motion. Cleaning the BodyGroomer is easy - pop-out the blade and rinse both under water.

Comparison:

Shaving my back with the ManGroomer took less than half the time than trying to use the BodyGroomer and didn't cause muscle cramps trying to get to all the tough areas but it wasn't comfortable on the skin. The BodyGroomer is much easier on the skin, and because of that it can take a little longer to shave but the results are worth it. The BodyGroomer is comfortable to use on your chest and private parts, something that I'd never try with the ManGroomer - it's just too rough. The reality is that if you're shaving yourself, you'll need both tools to do a thorough job. If you've got help, the BodyGroomer is a terrific tool in your hand or someone else's.

Does the job, not perfect but good value

Like many men today, I have grooming needs beyond what razor or scissors can handle. There's waxing (expensive, messy) but for fast growing body hair, it's simpler to just trim. This shaver does the trick-- it's easy to use, painless, and fast. Mine has been working fine for over 2 years now (using it a couple of times a month), making it a relative bargain.

While it's wet/dry safe, wet hair doesn't stick up as much for trimming, and the plastic combs/guards stick a bit to even dry skin, so it's best to use this dry. For safety, I use the shaver w/o a comb only on a few large/flat sections of skin-- needless to say, be careful around sensitive areas.

The design of the combs is my primary complaint (for which I deduct 1 star). The plastic sticks to skin that isn't completely dry/flat (eg, the curve of a shoulder), causing the comb to pop off and the foil to bounce off the skin (trimming that spot shorter than intended).

Other quibbles: The cutting foil (the "blades" of the shaver) needs to be replaced when it gets dull, which for me is 1-2x a year. Recharge time is a bit slow. Recently the on-off switch stuck in the "on" position. I was going to let the battery run down before trying to force the issue, but the button popped back out on its own. Even if the switch had stayed stuck and been unrepairable, I'd have ordered another unit-- it's been that convenient and effective.

The replacement foils are a bit expensive for the frequency of replacement, and the grip could be more ergonomic (and the combs could be smoother to use), but for the price this thing works very well. Recommended.
