Choosing a Razor
Why should I use an electric razor? Using an electric razor is gentle on the skin and offers the convenience to shave whenever and wherever you want. Why should I use a rotary razor vs. a foil razor? Comfort: Rotary razors evenly distribute pressure over your face when you shave, while foil razors have flat foil tubes that concentrate pressure on one spot causing more irritation. Durability: Philips Norelco rotary heads are more resistant to wear and tear and last longer than foil. Less mess: Foil razors' heavy vibrations cause shaved hairs to spray and cause a mess, while Philips Norelco razors’ rotation helps capture hairs and store them for disposal.
Comfortably Shaves Wet or Dry
With Shaver 8800, you can shave any way you want. The AquaTec seal gives you the option of either shaving with gel or foam for extra skin protection or dry for convenience. The razor can be used in or out of the shower. The low-friction SkinGlide shaving surface slides smoothly along your skin for a close shave without irritation.

My shaving history:
I began shaving 50 years ago. I started as a safety razor man and stayed that way for most of my life. For me, nothing beats the closeness and comfort of a blade shave. Along the way I tried various electric razors, but always found them to be a poor substitute when it came to shaving my dark beard. I started out with Gillette safety razors and stayed with them right up through the double-bladed Atra - which to my way of thinking was the ultimate blade shave. I tried some of the three and four blade razors that were introduced later and generally found them to be a great practical joke on the American public.
Eight or nine years ago I began to suffer from a condition known as Essential Tremor (ET). The good news is that ET is neither fatal nor contagious. Its primary effect is to make my hands tremble (in other people it can also affect the head, voice (a la Katherine Hepburn) and legs). Thank goodness my condition is limited to my hands!
As my ET progressed I soon discovered that shaving was something of a sword fight with an unarmed opponent (my face). As the number of nicks and cuts increased I realized I was going to have to switch to something less lethal than a safety razor.
I started looking at electric razors. I approached the subject with low expectations and not a lot of enthusiasm.Read more ›
When the batteries reach their end of life, you will not be able to shave until you buy a new razor. Philips could have easily designed a recessed socket with brass pins in the bottom of the razor so it could be run with the cord and still be waterproof for a cordless wet shave. The attorneys probably told them some idiot would run an extension cord into the shower and electrocute himself. (A missed opportunity to thin out the idiots in the world). There are no provisions to replace the batteries and continue using the razor. You take a $250 razor and throw it in the landfill. This is unacceptable to me. It is environmentally irresponsible to make a product useless after a single battery life. The batteries should be replaceable so the razor can be used until the motor wears out, as has been the case for all the Norelco razors in the past. My last Norelco, a 985RX has lasted 17 years. I replaced the heads every year and had a local repair shop replace the batteries every 2 to 3 years for around $25. It still works and I'll keep it around because I can still shave with it by plugging in the cord even when the batteries are dead. The 985RX was the top of the line Norelco in December 1995 when I got it.
I was afraid my old razor would die so I decided to try the new 3D.Read more ›
Philips Norleco has a rebate currently going on with Bed, Bath and Beyond. I was given a rebate sheet and receipt at checkout to send in. It is for $30. So, the total price of the Norelco 1290x is $150 plus tax.
