Now I've picked this one with cleaning station for 129.99 on sale (which is ~$180 here on Amazon at the time of this writing). I was determined to compare it side by side with the Braun 790, which itself is more than 2yrs old but at the moment had a 1 month old repacement cutter head. I was mostly motivated to compare the two, as well as contemplating the switch given sporadic availability of Braun cutter blocks at the time.
On the most important factor, the closeness of the shave: I dry-shave only with a preshave oil. I initially felt, or maybe just tried to convince myself, that Norelco is marginally closer, but after using both for about a month side by side, I honestly cannot say one is closer than the other. They are the truly same. If anything, I can say Norelco is at least not worse shave than Braun's cutter block replacement, that's certain, but i cannot say it is better either. Although with Braun, I would have to "force the issue" from time to time. I have an impression the original Braun cutter was a bit better than that.
In favor of Braun: Braun is _much_ faster though. If one is in a hurry, this may be important. Norelco requires multiple passes over the same patch to completely eliminate all the misses. Imo Braun series 7 also has much more elegant cleaning station design. Norelco's cleaning station is bulky, the power clip lock mechanism is weird. Braun is heavier and feels like it has more powerful motor and bigger battery capacity. The charge and hygiene indicators on Braun have better resolution, Norelco's charge indicator is just basic 3-led and no "hygiene", or state of "clean-ness" indication at all, it looks like. Braun has a coiled, space saving power cord, whereas Norelco has a last century, cheap looking and what i felt was a pretty flimsy cord design. Braun , as of 2/2017, seems to have overcome its cutter block suply issues, and at the time of this writing Braun's S 70 cutter block replacement is ~$38 vs Norelco's 90/62 ~$60.
OTOH in favor of Philips: Much quieter. Lighter weight as well, which may be both a plus (e.g., for travel) and a minus for some (I did not care either way really). Accepts most advanced series 9000 cutters, meaning one gets the most of quality of shave there is to have with Philips. Cutter block availability on Amazon was better than Braun's 70s until the last month (2/17). Now Braun seems to have restocked. The cleaning solution is said to last two times longer than Braun's one, which should also make its resupply about two times cheaper, although whether it holds to this in reality is to be seen. Norelco's shaver has the wet shave mode (which i don't use, it takes too much time in the morning for me to bother).
Other: they both seems to be made in EU, (a rarity these days), excellent quality. Both normally cost around the same, $180. I like cleaning feature in both about the same.
Bottom line, unless one must do wet shaves, IMO Braun is still a better value for the money. If one can get Norelco for what i did, $130, then Norelco maybe becomes slightly better value, although still a noticeably slower one. But Norelco cutter blocks are still IMO too expensive as opposed to competition. Thus, having bought Norelco at $50 discount, I am keeping it because i like them both and it is not such a big deal for me and in case Braun has supply issues again. But for $180, Norelco probably would have to go back, there are no decisive wins over Braun, while there are some small defeats from Braun in fairly important qualities.
This new design rips the hair and tugs the hair on my neck and cheeks and turns shaving into an ordeal worse than a dull razor. Couldn't get it to cut any of my neck whiskers that with ONE swipe my less expensive Norelco could.
What a deep disappointment and frivolous cost to have to discover on my own.
I never actually could get a complete shave with this being it was torturous and an easy completion with the older and cheaper design.
Long verson -- Smoothest shave I've had, right up there with the cartridge razors I used for 20yrs -- without the nicks and ingrown hairs. I shave daily for work, usually skip the weekends. Coarse, thick hair type. I moved to an electric in 2013 with the Norelco SensoTouch 3D (1290X). Then in late 2014, they redesigned the replacement heads, to universal hatred online. Instead of spending $65 on a poorly rated head replacement (recommended annually), I opted to spend some Christmas money on the Braun Series 7 foil shaver. Been very happy with that over the last year or so. Would have stuck with it, but I received this product as part of a promotion from Philips Norelco.
This model 8900 beats both previous razors. Compared to the SensoTouch 3D, the shave is a bit better. They've moved away from the charging stand and let you plug directly into the razor -- a huge win for frequent travelers. The cleaning stand now uses a cartridge instead of refilling a reservoir and they've removed the odd dunking-style contraption from the older version. Still not something I'd take on the road, but much better. The one down side is that they removed the integrated trimmer from the razor itself. Was a nice when I wanted to trim the sideburns or something real quick. Just slide the lever and the trimmer popped out from the body of the razor. It wasn't a strong performer, but it was convenient. With this version, you have to remove the shaver head and replace with the included trimmer head. But it's easy enough, and it has a semi-adjustable guard on it. Works well, just a little cumbersome.
Compared to the Braun Series 7, this is MUCH quieter, which the wife appreciates. Both the razor and the cleaning station for the Braun are pretty noisy. And the shave, while good with the Braun, is significantly better with this Norelco. I think the rotary just works better for my beard type than the foil by design. This also allows for a wet or dry shave, while the Braun is dry only. The one down side to the Norelco is cost of ownership. Replacement heads are more expensive (~$43 on Amazon every year, compared to $30 for a Braun foil every 18 months per their respective manual recommendations). But it's closer now compared to the SensoTouch ($65 annually). Cleaning cartridges are fairly close in price between the two. Again, the Braun is an excellent razor, and I'd have had no reason to change if Philips hadn't emailed and asked me to try out this one (first time that's every happened...who am I to say no, right?). But side by side, I've gotten a much better shave from this model. I'm willing to pay a little extra for the head replacements and deal with the minor trimmer annoyance. Think I'll stick with it.

TL;DR – Nice close shave with no razer burn. Shaver head is thin enough to get the area under the nose clean. Long lasting charge and easy to clean foils.
There’s just a lot to like about Philips shavers but the one that stands out for me is their ability to give me a good shave without a hassle or razer burn. The triple foil heads have so far done an excellent job for me. There is one important item to make note of here, when using a triple head shaver do not go back and forward, up and down. You need to run these things in a circular motion to get the best shave. This way the foils can get rid of a lot more hair for every pass you make. When looking at the foils it’s obvious why they get so much hair in one pass, they’re littered with tiny laser cut "S" shaped slots which allow the hairs to slide through easier so the blades can trim them. On lower models the foils have far fewer of these slots. I found that they catch even the shortest stubble.
The included edger does a nice job of trimming the hairs around my ears and side burns. It’s not a real bear trimmer as there's only three length settings on the included comb.
As it’s a wet or dry shaver I find that, depending on how my face feels (you just know it’s going to be a bad shaving day) I’ve used shaving cream to help reduce the lowlihood of a burn happening. The only real difference when doing this compared to dry shaving is that the shaver head needs a good rinsing whereas without cream all it takes is to pop open the head and tap the hairs out.
Please don’t do the typical guy thing and hurry to use the shaver. Plug it in and get the battery fully charged before using the first time. The first charge took about an hour which is pretty much how long it takes to go from drained to fully charged. Also spend 5 minutes going through the well laid out manual, it’s worth it and only a few pages with pictures.
The shaver has been designed for wet or dry use so taking it into the shower isn’t a problem. Personally I'd rather shave in front of a mirror so I never tried it with water other than rinsing it in the sink. An item to note here, it very clearly states in the manual to NOT use the shaver in the shower when plugged into the charger but then we already know it’s a bad idea to use a toaster in the tub.
Using the cleaning station is pretty much fool proof. I appreciate its simplicity, place the shaver in the holder (front side to the back) then push down on the cap to lock the shaver and push the power button. The rest is all automatic and it powers off when completed. While cleaning it also charges the shaver battery. Once the cleaning part of the procedure is complete it runs a drying phase which takes about 4 hours. There’s nothing to dislike about this as you get a clean shiny well running shaver head after every cleaning. The only thing you'll need to purchase in the future are the cleaning cartridges, they should be replaced every 3 months according to the manual. They are available here on Amazon, search "Philips SmartClean Cleaning Cartridge ". With my other shavers, I’ve found that if I make sure to give the shaver head a good warm water rinse at least once a week I don’t have to run the cleaning station anywhere near as often which saves me money by not buying the cartridges.
This thing runs quiet, I could shave in the bedroom and not wake my wife. It’s not a heavy device which makes manoeuvring it easy. Everything fits together perfectly. The charger here is the same as other current Philips devices, shavers and beard trimmers. This means being able to have and leave chargers in different locations (cottage) even when using multiple devices.
There are some nice features like a power switch lock (push and hold for 7 seconds to activate or deactivate) that are all nicely explained in the manual and yes, there are pictures for these items as well guys.
Shaver fits nicely into my hands, though it's much lighter in weight than my last two shavers. I was surprised however at the size of the Smartclean System. Much larger than it looks as advertised and will probably take up more room in your bathroom.
