Despite some of the Philips documentation mentioning to do some features with the 'remote control', the product does not come with one nor have I found one available to purchase as an accessory.
The product is fully featured and does all the things you would expect it to. You can even adjust the brightness on each display from dim-med-bright. HOWEVER- when you attempt to adjust the brightness on the 'slave' unit, it displays that this is "not available". And it seems to default the slave unit to 'dim'. BUT- if you take it out of slave mode, set the brightness and then put it back in slave mode it will keep your brightness setting. Not fatal, but one wonders why they did that.....
The headrest straps route through 2 metal pins embedded in the rear of each display. You run the strap through these, around your headrest (raised a couple of inches so the strap makes contact with the metal rods that support the headrest), and then clasped together. The mounting is very solid and you can tighten it so the display is held firmly against the seat.
The shipment came with:
2- A/C adapters
1- Car adapter with 2 cables that come straight from the plug. Not a single cable that Y's off after several feet. Not sure I like this from a cable mess perspective.
1- slave video/audio cable
1- video cable
2- headrest straps
Thus far I am pleased. Now comes the longevity test.
UPDATED 6-6-2011- My 21 month old twins don't ride in the car well after about 30 minutes without nearly constant attention from the front seat passenger (Mom). Recently we had to travel an hour each way to an event and it was the quietest 2 hours on record for the twins. LOVE it so far for that.
I also love how it remembers where your place in the program and starts back at that spot. Also, it auto-replays so when you reach the end of the DVD, it starts over. With no remote control and no way to see the controls from the front seat this is ideal.
I do wish I could downgrade my rating to 4 stars: buttons on the top of the unit would have been preferable to under the screen in the front (where they can be reached by toes). If you are not fluent with the position of the front panel keys, if you are in the front seat, you have to detach the unit so you can operate the buttons.
PROS: Clarity of image and sound, DVDs have not skipped over bumpy roads, program returns exactly where it left off when the ignition was turned off, both players can accommodate headsets, and each DVD can be connected together to allow the same show to be displayed OR it can play 2 different DVDs for each child in the back - this is a great feature especially if you have a big gap in age with the kids (or if Mom/Dad want to watch their show in the back seat!). You can also remove one of the players and use an AC adaptor to play it inside the house.
CONS: You have to make sure the DVDs are set totally flat in the player or they won't play, the manual control buttons take some time to get used to (but even a 7 y.o. can figure them out), there is no external remote control for the parents in the front seat to control the program/volume, there is no battery back up for the players in case you want to bring it inside a restaurant or store for the kids.
We have been so pleased with these players that we opted not to get the DVD entertainment package on our new vehicle and just use these instead. The kids love them, they were much cheaper than the entertainment package, and they get to watch different DVDs at the same time. We'll see how long they last!
The catch is that the dang thing just doesn't seem to be well built. We had one of the 2 screens just stop working one day (not sure why it died, but ever since it happened, we unplug the power cord whenever starting the car and we haven't had a problem since). Amazon did a great job processing an exchange and we had a whole new set very quickly. However, a couple months after that, power adaptor came apart - rather than being a single molded piece, there are several parts that can loosen and come unscrewed. This was pretty easily fixed, just find all the little parts (spring, fuse, etc.) and put them back in the plug in the right order. Unfortunately, when this happened, one of the two power cords also stopped working (the plug splits into 2 cords, one for each screen). just recently, the other stopped as well. turns out, the wires, which are pretty thin, broke inside the plug where they were soldered together. This was also pretty easily fixed with some new solder and a soldering iron, but we're getting pretty tired of having to keep fixing this thing.
overall just 3 stars out of 5 because of the reliability issues. other than that, this is a really nice DVD player set.
