Enjoy movies, music, and audio while you are on the go with the PET741M Portable DVD Player from Philips. This DVD player features a 7" LCD screen designed to display your media in rich detail and vibrant colors. Its native 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio means you won't get the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen during video playback and without the picture quality loss that often comes from video scaling. In addition to standard DVD playback, the PET741M supports several other multimedia formats, including DVD+/-R and +/-RW, SVCD, CD, and MP3-CD. You can also play JPEG files you have saved onto a compatible disc.

That said, for the price, this player met (and maybe even exceeded) all of our expectations. Is the picture quality high def? No. Are the speakers loud? No. Are the buttons kind of flimsy? Yes. But when you're on a 4,500 mile, two week road trip with a 6 year old boy, this was an absolute life saver.
We switched back and forth between a 1/4" audio cable from the player to our car's aux audio jack and our son's headphones, so audio wasn't an issue. The speakers worked on the brief occasions that it was used in a hotel room.
Playback worked every time. And yes, there is a setting for starting your video where you left off if you power down the device. On our player this was already on by default.
Isn't going to win any "military grade" build awards. But this was actually dropped from about 4 feet to concrete once and it survived without any damage.
Don't expect this battery to be "all day" like an iPad. Or even long enough to watch an entire movie. Just consider it a handy back-up when you're moving between power outlets. We used the included car adapter with no issues.
Completely baffled our iOS raised 6 year old. But pretty straight forward for those of us who know our way around other consumer electronics menu systems. Was no problem for the 10 year old who traveled with us.
Looks on par with those old all-in-one VHS player/TV's from the 90's. But hey, it's 7 inches. The overall size of the device is really great though. You can stick this thing just about anywhere as you're moving from car to tent to hotel to home. Anything bigger and you might as well use a laptop.
Overall, I'd say stop worrying over which $50-$80 poorly designed plastic disc player you should get while you wait for ubiquitous wi-fi. This one works well.
EA Electronics gets high marks from me, too. I received my package even *sooner* than expected! (How often does that happen?)
The only drawback some might mind is it vibrates and makes a little noise when playing a disc.
An Internet search revealed that there are no third-party batteries or suppliers to service this machine. Therefore, one would have to take it to Philips where IF a battery were available, replacing it would be VERY expensive.
There's nothing thin or light about this machine (it' not Apple) it could have been easily designed with a user replaceable battery.
Instead, Philips has manufactured another disposable product that will likely end up in a landfill way ahead of its time. I suppose I could have done more thorough research and discovered this sad fact prior to my purchase. However disclosing a defect "in advance" does not make the company less responsible for poor design decisions.
This unit will only play "R1" NTSC DVDs . Also, UOPs (User Operation Prohibition) are enabled, prohibiting the viewer from Fast Forwarding during sections of a DVD that are protected by this universally loathed feature, meaning that you may be FORCED to watch certain content (previews, long introductions) that you have no interest in.
the only complaint I have is that I don't want to open the player when the DVD is still spinning, but I am not sure yet how to let the DVD stop spinning first… It just seems to constantly be spinning if its in the player. Not a big deal though.
I am very happy with my purchase.
