Philips O'Neill SHO9560/28 The Stretch Over-Ear Headphones (Black Bordeaux)

Philips O'Neill SHO9560/28 The Stretch Over-Ear Headphones (Black Bordeaux)
Tangle-Free, Stress-Relief Cable and Reinforced Connectors

These headphones are tough enough to go wherever you do--take them on the mountain, the bike, the skateboard, the plane, the subway, or hook them up to your computer. Unlike headphones with plastic cables, The Stretch is constructed with a flexible, tangle-free fabric cable that moves with you, keeping you totally immersed in the music. Strong aluminum connectors reinforce the audio jack, and cable stress relief means that if the cable gets caught, it will disconnect without pulling on your headphones or listening device--a great feature for active users.

The Most Durable Material for the Toughest Headphones

Featured on The Stretch, TR55LX is a durable, temperature-resistant material that's perfect for the lifestyle of any action-sports enthusiast. If you're in a situation where you're freezing, melting, or breaking, don't worry about your headphones, because chances are they're just fine.

TR55LX is an impact-resistant, stress-crack resistant material that retains its flexibility and strength--even at extreme temperatures. This incredibly tough material has a surface hardness that is six times the hardness of polycarbonate, the material most commonly used in heavy-duty headphones. Unlike polycarbonate, which can become brittle at subzero temperatures, TR55LX always remains flexible, whether it's -10 degrees Fahrenheit or 100 degrees Fahrenheit. And unlike other headphone materials that decrease in strength after prolonged storage in high temperatures, TR55LX can handle the hottest place on the planet for months on end without being affected.

Soft Ear Cushions and Flexible Headband for Optimal Fit

Unlike too-tight headphones that can cause headaches, The Stretch features two headbands for maximum comfort. A translucent, super-flexible outer headband provides durability, while the auto-fit cushioned inner headband--made from comfy neoprene padding--stretches to fit your head. And designed after extensive research, the deluxe, super-soft, noise-isolating ear cushions provide exceptional padding for hours of comfort, and they block out external noise, so you can focus on the music.

I'm going to start off with disagreeing with some of the negative reviews on here concerning the sound quality. The reason being, is because for the price you pay, I think these headphones sounded very capable and accurate, especially as I do own "audiophile" grade speakers and electronics in my main HT/Audio system, and I do actually sit and "listen" to music, even though its sometimes hard to find time to do so as much as I would like. They are very neutral, with sufficient bass and depth, and don't influence the overall sound one way or the other, and quite frankly, are in fact comparable with the "beats" by Dre headphones considering the price point. If you are expecting audiophile quality sound, then buy audiophile quality headphones, but be prepared to pay the premium that goes along with them, its really that simple. I read the complaints of the highs being muffled and the bass somewhat lacking, however I found that these headphones, reproduced highs and lows very well, with excellent midrange and it was moreso the source material and quality of the encoding, that affected the sound more than the headphones themselves. They were purchased originally for traveling with my Ipod Touch and Ipad, with those being the sources I mainly tested for the purpose of this review, with a slight edge going to the Ipad for overall sound quality. They performed equally impressively on most types of music I listen to which ranges from Modern rock, contemporary Jazz, to Hip-hop, Alternative, Motown, 60's,70's, and 80's new wave. They were more than adequate for playback of movies and video, as well as gaming, on either the Touch or Ipad. In fact, they will probably serve duty for general everyday listening, as well as traveling, as the sound was that impressive.Read more ›

I love how review geeks write their "pro" audiophile reviews for what is to me an entry/mid level Around-the-Ear Headphones. That being said I gave these headphones 5 stars as deservedly so. I'll tell you why in the 4 categories Amazon splits review stars into.

I am not a tech geek or audiophile. I enjoy listening to music and watching movies on my laptop. If you want studio quality sound for studio work, buy studio headphones for $300+ more.

Comfort: 5 stars
Amazingly comfortable. The first day I had them I listened to music while I lifted weights in the morning. Had no problem with them being cumbersome or in the way at any point. I used them later on in the evening to watch a Dexter marathon on my laptop. I had them on for about 4 hours straight and the only thing I can say negative is that my ears started getting sweaty. But that might even be a good thing as this can refer to the seal of the ear pads being fully encapsulated. Not once did I feel uncomfortable. The adjustable neoprene-like band is a nice touch for heads of all sizes. I have a bigger head and a lot of headphones I try to use end up getting uncomfortable at the top. Not these. The around the ear design is flawless. Covered my ears completely and were very cushion comfortable. I LOVE the braided rope cord. It does not tangle and looks very sheik.

Durability: 4.5 stars
I can't imaging what it would take to break the frame of these headphones. They are made of a stretch nylon material that literally twists and shapes any way you pull it. Very cool. I haven't had these for very long so i don't know how the small parts will hold up. There are a couple of hinges that could fail down the line but that goes for most other headphones too.

To answer the negative reviews about sound: yeah, these aren't a pair of Boss. But for the price, the sound quality is very good. I think it is actually good for headphones at twice the price. I've used them to listen to rock, indie, acoustic guitar, classical, audio books, eurohouse, folk, and live recordings. The headphones faithfully reproduce the sound with decent bass and no shrill edges to the high notes. For example, they bring out the subtlety of a Yo-Yo Ma solo, playing even the soft sounds at the beginning or end of a stoke with the bow. The bass is fine for me, and I like a bit of extra bass. If you want sub-woofer, shake-your-brain kinda bass these, or any, headphones might not be for you.
The noise reduction is quite noticeable. I no longer hear a certain coworker cackling when she visits my office-neighbor. I swear that woman laughs like Ursula the Sea Witch from the Little Mermaid. It drives me nuts. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) I also don't hear anyone knocking on my partially closed door either...
Comfort is a huge deal for me. I wear these at work for 2-10 hours at a time. They hug the head enough to keep them in place, but do not squeeze. I wear a large hat size, my head is 23 inches in circumference [yes, I just measured it]. The headphones fit just as well on a friend of mine, whose head is smaller. The design of the band on the top is genius, just enough tension to get a snug fit but not so much the ear pieces pull upwards. The parts that touch my skin are soft and my ears fit easily inside.
The cord connection near the ear pieces has saved my head and probably the headphones some damage. It takes a bit of pressure for it to pop apart but not much. In my case, my head jerked sideways, with very minimal discomfort, and then it disconnected.
To summarize, I love these headphones. They work for me, the sound is good to very good, they are comfortable, and I like the style.
