Blargh

There will never again be a webcam this good

These webcams have not been produced for a long time now. It is rare that you will see one for sale.
I own 2 of them. I use them for astrophotography. I take pictures of the night sky through my telescopes. These webcams are spectacular for that purpose. Reason being is that the imaging chip is CCD and not CMOS like all of the new webcams. CMOS chips are cheaper to produce because they are easier to produce. And they are easier to produce because they are crap!
The cheaper astrophotography cams are CMOS. You can't get an astrophotography cam for less than several hundred. Unless you buy the cheap knock-off crap from China. And you get what you pay for.
The lens simply unscrews, and you (carefully) screw in a 1.25" webcam adapter and you're done. It does take some very careful focus on your telescope to get the image in focus, but once you develop the skill this webcam is spectacular.
It is very unlikely that a manufacturer will ever again make such a good webcam for such a good price.

best camera under $250

the over view:

I have owned the lifecam 5000 and n6000 from MicroSoft and the Logitech pro-5000 besides this unit. I will very simply say that this camera in most indoor light conditions is just hands down the winner. With the included software Vlounge I have been able to capture and very easily webcam videos with my friends and family. This is an ok snapshot camera but its strong suit is its video and it does this well. Oh and an easy install on both the laptop and the desktop...(Insert cd..follow prompts, restart computer, plug in camera, restartcomputer when told to by prompts..start Vlounge..your up and running)

THE HIGHS:

AWESOME dim light filming...great frame rates (easy 60 frames on my laptop with enclosed software. MONITOR feature that allows you to set the camera as a room monitor that senses movement and automaticly films ...PLUS emails you to let you know...

THE CONS:

The bracket does suck...BUT THERE IS A TRIPOD SCREW MOUNT. (My brother bought a mini tripod for his for $6 at walmart) I use mine with the original stand/bracket thing by putting it on the speaker on my desk. Fact is I would rather use this with great video than have have a great tripod and sucky video. So i guess if you moving around with your laptop while filming than this is not the cam for you. But if you can get by without clamping this to your screen than you will be rewarded with great video....

Last but not least, there are some minor annoyances. Like the USB 2.0 "compatable" thats what the box says..."not" that it is "2.0" but that its "2.0 compatable" so they didn't lie then just misled.... also the "90" frame rates...its really 60...

BOTTOM LINE: Its 5 stars...I know how can it be with an iffy stand and the other minor issues...WELL the video and dim light ability, plus the room monitor, easy install and software, at under $100...heck not even $75 bucks make it an awesome buy...

Well, I used this camera for a very odd purpose: planetary astrophotography. It works quite well for this. Upon arrival, I gutted and placed its delicate parts in a new project box that I equipped with a telescope nose-piece adapter. The camera is performing quite wonderfully.

Good Product but Cheaper elsewhere

I purchased this product after visiting my son-in-law who uses the cam for astro-telescope photos. If you are into that you will need some additional free software available on the internet. The cam software is somewhat difficult to install on Windows Vista. You need to download the Vista drivers from the Phillips website. Do not follow cam instructions that says to install camera drivers form CD first. I had to use windows restore several times. I succeed by starting clean connecting camera to USB and starting the PC. Let windows search for drivers on internet, once found go to Phillips web site and install the vista drivers, then go back to cd and install vlounge only. You might start instead of trying to download vista drivers from website first, reboot and connect cam; I did not try and do that. On my xp computer I just use the CD, worked fine.

I purchased this camera from this vendor last month for $89 dollars. What is confusing is that the SPC900NC has suffixs of 00,24 (may have been 27),37. I checked with Philips they indicated that the only differance is the region where the product is marketed otherwise they are the same. I have the 37 my son-in-law has 00, both work the same both work with Vista. You can buy the same product on ebay new and have seen it on amazon for around $50 including shipping. Other vendors write-up are not as pretty. Astromony is an expensive hobby, and even though this is a good vendor (did have some problems with shipping mixup)and they were responsive but their service is not worth another $70 more when you include shipping.

low-light goodness

The performance of this camera under low light conditions is very impressive. Taking into account its price, it is almost unbelievabale. In a room lit by three CFLB, this camera can deliver crisp images at 60 fps (I never tried anything higher since I do not need anything higher). This is absolutely amazing, as it manages to outperform a Canon camcorder, which under the same lighting, it generates a very noisy (or smudgy) image. Comparing it to the Logitech camera integrated into the laptop I write this review from, is like comparing analog TV to HDTV (in terms of the visibility of the performance difference). The Logitech barely achieves 4 fps, and the image is extremely dark (this is after applying all the "enhancements" that Logitech provides).

The only downside, as almost everybody have mentioned is the mounting mechanism. Currently, I have it mounted on a small tripod. This was my solution to positioning it on top of a CRT monitor.
