Cool Lights but Manufacturing Defect (you can fix) and 2 Design Flaws

Cool Lights but Manufacturing Defect (you can fix) and 2 Design Flaws
UPDATED (May 14, 2019) with night time photos. Note that there are 3 lights across the back of the house which easily light up an area that is about 120 ft long by 35 ft deep.I've been waiting to get my hands on these new Philips Hue Discovery outdoor color LED flood lights since they were announced at CSE in January. The wait is finally over but there are some issues with both the design and manufacturing that makes installing these more difficult than it needs to be. Also, the mounting bracket hardware could have been made from a stronger more ridged metal and there should have been a tiny wrench included to be able to tighten the nearly microscopic decorative cap nuts that hold everything to the wall. Or better yet, make the nuts bigger and include a spare! WARNING, if you drop one of the tiny little rubber washers or cap nuts your probably not going to find it unless your installing these light over a solid surface like a patio or driveway. If you drop them into decorative rocks or grass, GOOD LUCK!Manufacturing Defect: The wall plate and mounting arm are not level. (SEE PICTURES and VIDEO) I ordered 5 of these lights and they all have the same, very noticeable, defect which appears to be the result of something being a little out of spec with the mounting arm, and/or significant over torquing of the screws that attach the arm to the wall plate. However, there is a "fix" to get them more level. When looking at the back of the wall plate, you will see two screws in the center that attach the arm to the wall plate. (SEE PICTURE with Green Arrows) By slightly loosening those two screws you can adjust the arm to make it level with the wall plate, or at least very close to level. I was able to hold the arm in place and retighten the screws enough to where I'm sure they aren't going to come loose on their own. If you make them as tight as they were out of the box (which seems excessive) the arm will start to twist out of alignment again.2 Design Flaws: First, the way the red and black wires for the led driver are routed inside the wall plate, they are pretty much running over the top of one of the holes used for the mounting bracket screws. (SEE PICTURE) There is almost no way to avoid the wires rubbing against the threads of the mounting screw. If you aren't careful during installation, you could potentially damage a wire or cut into the insulation around them, possibly causing a short.Second, the holes inside the wall plate for the 2 mounting screws don't extend far enough and getting them lined up with the screws on the mounting bracket for installation can be frustrating when you're 12 feet off the ground on a latter. It's even more difficult to get the holes lined up with the screws while making sure not to pinch or damage one of those red and black wires that are running right over one of the holes, all without being able to see.My suggestion for Philips is to have the holes for the mounting screws extend further so they are as close to being flush with the back edges of the wall plate. Since the holes are recessed so far into the wall plate, you can't use your finger to feel where the hole is and help get the screws lined up without being able to see them. Also, by extending the screw hole posts, the issue with the led driver wires running over the top of the hole would be avoided as the hole posts would stick out further and the wires can be run under or over the posts. That would keep the wires out of the way and protected from damage during install.Oh ya, it would have been nice if a gasket was included to help seal the edges around the wall plate once it's installed. The mounting hardware isn't ridged enough to really tighten them down and fit snugly against the wall for a weatherproof seal, it flexes too easily. The installation instructions do call for caulking around the fixture which will work but makes install, removal or replacement messier then needed vs. a simple gasket.Overall, I'm happy with the styling and way these light operate, good color range and they are attractive fixtures. As for durability, I will see how they hold up in the Arizona heat in the next few month. They are affordable and the overall quality seems to be inline with what one would expect at that price point but it seems like Philips could tweak a couple minor things to make these a great value and much easier to install.I haven't seen how much light they put out at night yet but will update this review once I see how they perform.

I was one of the very first consumers to purchase this product. In fact, I purchased all three of mine from Amazon when they were first offered for sale. If you've considered purchasing this floodlight, there are a few things that you NEED to know. Let's just get a few things out of the way. First off, are the lights bright? Yes, they are very colorful and bright. My wife and I love the output of each floodlight. I've uploaded a video of my backyard privacy patio. ALL of the lights featured in my video are from Philips (now Signify). My 12 individual bulbs are 3rd gen Philips Hue Color + White. You can clearly see each one of those individual bulbs in the video. The three Philips Hue Discover Outdoor White & Color Ambiance Floodlights are each mounted behind all three of my 4 foot Texas Lone Stars. These floodlights were immediately detectable by my Philips Bridge and I was able to have them working in tandem with my other Philips lights. I have NO complaints about the floodlights performance. The video speaks for itself. You can compare the output of the line-of-sight Hue bulbs to the output of the indirect lighting of the Hue floodlights. With all of the good mentioned about these floodlights in my review, here's the issue. In a word: MOUNTING. The solution for mounting these floodlights are ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. For a floodlight of this caliber, the mounting solution is one of the worse I've ever seen. Each light comes with two cheap brackets that mount in a shape that's similar to a plus sign and held together by one center screw and one pivot screw. It gets even worse. If you unbox the floodlights and set them flat on a table or counter top, you will immediately notice that these floodlights are not perfectly symmetrical. The mounts come with two longer type metal screws but the screw holes that are punched into the bracket are totally off center from each other. This causes a secondary issue. It's an additional issue that causes this floodlight to be even more off center when it's mounted up. So, the consumer is left with an issue. Do you want the base of your light to be perfectly symmetrical on the surface to which you have mounted it? If so, your floodlight will be canted off center to one side. It is VERY noticeable. It will look very lopsided like you really messed up on installing your floodlight. So, you are left with a dilemma. Is it possible to have your floodlight facing towards you and appear level / symmetrical (or wherever you plan on facing it)? Yes, but once you do that, the base of the floodlight will now be completely lopsided. Again, it will look like you messed up the install. For me, it was less of an issue because each one of my floodlights are not directly in view and are hidden behind my Texas Lone Stars. Another issue for this light is weather-proofing. There is no back plate, there is no gasket and there is no rubberized sealer that would help keep out the elements. The backside of the floodlight is just open. Again, a floodlight of this caliber and at this price point is unacceptable, especially by today's standards. A gasket or back plate would have cost Philips no more than $3 - $4 to manufacture (maybe even MUCH less than $3 - $4). Instead, Philips wants you to buy some silicone caulking and glop it around the edges of the base of their floodlight. So, I'm at a crossroad here. I can ABSOLUTELY recommend this floodlight based on its' performance and in the same breath, I CANNOT recommend this floodlight to those who truly need an off-the-shelf weather enduring outdoor floodlight. If you can put up with the floodlight being crooked to one side or the other, then knock yourself out and enjoy your purchase. 5 STARS FOR COLORFUL AND RICH FLOODLIGHT PERFORMANCE. 1 STAR FOR AN UNACCEPTABLE MOUNTING / WEATHER PROOFING OUTDOOR FLOODLIGHT.

Not sure why there are so many reviews harping on the installation of this product. Before I get to that, some backstory:

I am heavily invested in the Hue ecosystem. Thousands of dollars invested. Two “living rooms”, porch and front of house, console table, recessed downlights, BR30’s, regular Philips Hue white and color, you name it I probably have it. Out of all of their products, probably the only issue I have is their technical issue syncing with Alexa and multiple bridges. I digress.

Installation was straightforward. I removed a janky motion floodlight that the previous homeowners had installed, so I was installing into an existing internal electrical box.

The mounting bracket fit perfectly into the existing screw holes, which were standard exterior lighting setup (porch lights). With this light being about 8 feet off the ground, I installed the mounting plate, extended the two long mounting screws to their max setting, and made an “X” temporarily to get all the wiring done.

I loosened the ground screw on the bracket, wrapped the ground wire from the light around the screw, then “hooked” the very thick existing ground to the screw, then tightened it up. Gently let the light dangle from the ground wire as I wired the black and white wires with my own screw taps (really Philips? Those cost like a penny, could’ve included 3 of them). Got everything nice and snug, moved the outer part of the bracket to make the mounting screws level, put the light on it, and handscrewed the two cap bolts on. Hit the switch, light came on! It literally couldn’t have been more straightforward. Do some research, you’ll have trouble mounting this on an addon external box. But if you are replacing a porch light, any monkey can do it and do it well.

It had rained the day after I installed it, no issues with water.

The light itself is BRIGHT, and unfortunately for me I do not have any other Hue lights to go with it, since it’ll output a single color of a scene. But, I plan on putting a 2m lightstrip on the gutter above and at least give it a little bit of flavor.

Easy to adjust with the included hex wrench, very strong and sturdy teeth-system to lock the panel in whatever direction you want.

    Install? 5/5
    Light Output? 5/5

That’s pretty much all that matters. Yes, Philips could have included those taps to connect the wires. But I have millions of those laying around. Or better yet, use the more than likely ones that were in whatever existing light you had. I would have preferred a way to adjust the head without a tool, but that’s a minor gripe. Doesn’t detract from the power of the light. Works like any other Hue light in the app.

Considering installing two more in the front to replace my “porch” lights. It’d probably blind the wife leaving the house in the wee hours of the morning though.

I recently purchased the Philips Hue White & Color Ambiance LED Floor Light, and it has exceeded my expectations in every way. The installation was a breeze, taking only a few minutes to set up. Once installed, the light looks sleek and modern, adding a touch of sophistication to my living space.

One of the standout features is the wide range of color choices available. Whether I want a calm, relaxing ambiance with soft whites or a vibrant, party atmosphere with bold colors, this light has it all. It’s perfect for setting the mood for any occasion.

I paired the light with a remote switch, which makes it incredibly convenient to control from anywhere in my home. This added functionality is a game-changer, allowing me to turn the light on and off or adjust the brightness without needing my phone.

The accompanying app is intuitive and user-friendly. I particularly enjoy the preset effects, like the flame effect, which adds a fun and dynamic element to the lighting. It’s great for creating a cozy, warm atmosphere on a chilly evening.

Overall, I highly recommend the Philips Hue White & Color Ambiance LED Floor Light. It combines ease of installation, versatility, and advanced features to enhance any space beautifully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Hue quality as always!

I was going to give this four stars but since there's another review complaining about the back plate which is totally wrong I figure I will give five to make up for theirs. This is your typical Hue quality light and works amazing. We had a dedicated flood light in our backyard that this replaced and it is just as bright if not brighter, it lights up my entire backyard. The only reason I was going to give four stars is because it was really complicated to install as you install the wall plate first and then have to put the light on over top which was really difficult to get the screws to line up with the holes. Took me forever to finally get it whereas other Hue outdoor lights mount to the wall significantly easier. Really happy with it especially as now when we are in the pool at night we don't need a super bright white flood light but can dim it or change it to a nicer color!

I am amazed at the negative reviews (albeit the French one-what can one say). The package is complete with all components for a 4 " octagonal outlet box. 1 reviewer also alleged it comes with dimming and motion features (BS), as this is an outdoor lite if U pack too much processing it will probably crap out as it has to withstand -40 to +40. Leave ur smartphone outside 24/7 and see how long it lasts. I took of the old ugly lites (20 years in the zeitgeist era of basic illumination) and the mounting was very straight forward (about 30 minutes) as the instructions were crystal clear - just follow em. 1 reviewer earlier to this one mentioned that the 2 PVC mounting inserts for the back plate screws were hard to align. I am glad they are precision fitting and not wobbly as I do not want ingress of elements and bugs in the circuitry. They lined up perfectly and used a 7 mm ignition wrench to torque em down as you do not want to use a ratchet for obvious reasons. the HUE bridge connected in a jiffy and Alexa allowed me to synch as well for a schedule for energy conservation. I installed these just recently so cannot comment on longevity but hey its Philips. The lite output is about 2800 lumens with ambient setting for the occasion. I will set mine at Polish amber to avoid bugs flirting around my front door in the fly/moth season so this is a bonus one cannot deny. Easy install for anyone who does not waste his time watching sitcoms and has DTer skillsets. A little pricey but hey U get what U pay for.
