- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2024This is a must have for any Christian, but especially for orthodox. You don’t have to be a monk to read and benefit from its teachings. There’s so many new concepts in unique theology that you can only find in this series this volume of book however there is a caveat that it’s not for the faint of heart or someone who would try to go live on their own as a monk, especially for those unprepared I don’t believe that’s the purpose, though it is the go to or how to for asceticism.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2022Reading the Philokalia, as a householder, requires a fair amount of discrimination since it was not written with us as the intended audience. If you don't discriminate as to which part of the message can be incorporated into your life and which parts were never meant for you, this series can be more detrimental to your spiritual growth than helpful. Let's take some examples ...
There is much written about the renunciation of wealth and embracing of poverty. Obviously, that is not for the householder (e.g. those living in the world, having families, holding down jobs, and supporting the functions of the church). Let's face it, without us householders who acquire MORE than enough wealth to meet our needs, we wouldn't have the means to support our local parish and diocese, contribute to the IOCC, donate to monasteries, etc. Without us, monks would be hard-pressed to engage in their renunciative lifestyle.
It's instruction such as this, along with others, that we must have the wisdom to consider how we can modify it to be useful to our particular roles as householders within the church.
I primarily wanted to read the Philokalia to gain greater insights into hesychia, nepsis, the interplay of the tripartite soul and the "nous". I also wanted to understand how the enemy strategizes and uses various tactics against us to gain entrance into the mind and heart. I wanted to learn to be more watchful, and understand how to detect them (e.g. the enemy with its poisonous thoughts and images) before they reach the walls of the temple and can manage to enter the holy of holies and defile it. I wanted to learn how to progress along this path of purification, illumination and theosis. And there is plenty inside this series to properly educate the Orthodox Christian.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2022The perception, choices and devotion of those who have accomplished great deeds are of the greatest value to those seeking reorientation today. I am grateful for the guidance granted by the continuity represented by the chain of custody that delivered the four-volume set of the Philokalia to my mailbox, from our Saviour Christ, to the Patriarchs, to translators Theophan the Recluse, Palmer, Sherrard and Ware, to OrthodoxInsight, to Amazon.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2020Next to a good translation of the All Holy Bible and Ladder of Divine Ascent, needs to be a copy of the Philokalia! This printer has brought us that in four easy to handle and well built paper backs. I wish they were hard cover as I would gladly pay more, but they are well constructed and gives us the spiritual food we need from the Church Fathers!
A must have. All Glory to God!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2024If you want to dive into the wisdom of the Philokalia look no further.
This is it and there's even better news. They finally produced the final volume (Volume 5) too!
Life's good!
Thanks.
