Having Fun Thinking Hard

One of the pleasures of my undergraduate experience was the late-night talk-fests in which my friends and I tackled the Big Questions, often sparked by the latest The Twilight Zone episode. Rod Serling wanted his viewers to think hard about difficult issues and the intention of the editors of Philosophy in The Twilight Zone is to challenge readers to carry out Serling's project.

Using different Twilight Zone episodes as the basis of its chapters, this book focuses on a wide variety of issues such as the nature of prejudice, whether there could literally be a "twilight zone," what sorts of traits would make a being worthy of worship, the difference between reality and fiction, whether death is a bad thing, and so on.

While one or two of the chapters are rather technical (e.g., Richard Hanley's "Where is the Twilight Zone?" makes use of non-Euclidean geometry), most don't assume any previous knowledge of the philosophical literature.

Those who think doing philosophy is fun - and don't mind the challenge of following rigorous philosophical arguments - will be amply rewarded by this book.

If all philosophy is is an attempt to get out of the room without using the door, then steer clear of this dull thud of a book and open the door to the Zone via your DVDs (or videotapes) - and use your own key of Imagination to unlock that door.

There is nothing illuminating in the essays in this totally unnecessary book that would not occur to a viewer of the shows under discussion provided that viewer even possessed half a brain. (And to be a TZ fan requires a certain amount of intelligence and imagination.) Also, the philosophical points being made in each of the essays in the book could easily....easily...have been boiled down to a paragraph or two at most. But - philosophers notoriously love to talk or write... most times just to talk or write! And if the philosophical points being made in this book were not rehashed and reworded and regurgitated time and again, well, there'd be no book. Simplicity, elegance, truly novel insights are not to be found in these mentally masturbatory ramblings. And many of the most philosophical episodes are not even addressed herein.

There are so many books about the Zone: Zicree's seminal study was good for its time, but too brief in episode analysis. The same is true of Presnell/McGee's "Critical Study." More recently we have the overly detailed and ineptly written doorstop of a book by Martin Grams and the quasi-philosophical, highly inaccurate book by Douglas Brode. When....when will someone write the ultimate book on the "Zone": one that analyzes each and every episode with regards to its story, its acting, its musical score, its direction, its cinematography: in short, an aesthetic examination of the episodes as cinematic works of Art. Cast lists and story synopsis (already rehashed in three of the above mentioned books)and music cues and even well-written philosophical analysis are all okay - but the ultimate book would open a reader's eyes to things that might be more subliminal and subtle and might go unnoticed by both the casual and avid viewer. One point might suffice by way of example: has anyone ever thought of the opening to each episode of the last season - and as the door in space approaches the viewer horizontally, damn, but it looks just like the monolith floating amongst the stars in "2001". Is it possible that Kubrick was subliminally influenced by the image, for it is a very mysterious, moving, unsettling visionary vision as seen in both instances. And surely Bowman passes into the Twilight Zone itself in the closing sequences of Kubrick's masterpiece.

Anyway - back to this unreasonably costly book (it is a slim volume and only has one photo in it!) - it just ain't worth the price of admission.
