I was unable to put the book down as each and every line, written in an accessible, informed, poetic way, gave me insight into not only the individuals Dr. Ferdowsian writes about but also her journey over time. A testimonial, an offering, a witnessing the book offers just enough detail about individual circumstances to bring the reader into the experience without overwhelming us with potentially aversive details. That’s a fine balance to maintain but is done so masterfully. That she has been able to hear these stories, bear witness to these sufferings yet come out the other side with an ever deeper commitment to change is in itself remarkable and aspirational. This book will be required reading for classes I teach related to human and animal ethics as well as a book I will gift friends who are wondering how we can stop these seemingly endless cycles of abuse and desperation.
