Phosguard rapidly removes phosphate and silicate from marine and freshwater aquaria. It is not recommended for phosphate buffered freshwater. Phosguard is highly porous for high capacity and bead-shaped for optimum water flow. It outperforms all competing products.

DirectionsMay generate heat on initial contact with water. Pre-wet by adding to a double volume of freshwater, followed by a rinse. For best results, PhosGuard™ should be rinsed before use and placed so as to maximize the flow of water through it but not so that it tumbles against itself in flow. It may be used in a canister filter, media chamber, box filter, or any high flow area of a trickle filter. Use of a filter bag is recommended. Use 85 mL (1/3 cup) for every 200 L (50 US gallons) saltwater or 400 L (100 US gallons) freshwater.

Typically I change the PhosGuard every 6-8 weeks or more frequently if my tanks phosphate levels run high when testing the water. After putting the recommended dose for your tank size in a media bag, you should rinse it well under RO water. Otherwise you'll experience a huge amount of dust in your tank. Even after rinsing, you'll notice a release of some dust when you place it in your tank.
She loads so much seaweed into our 175 gallon tank that a whale cold live of it, and it results in tons of phosphates from decomposing organic mater.
It saves us a lot of water changes.
