‘This book offers a complete package for those who want to learn Photoshop CS5 inside out'. (Photoshop Daily.com, August 2010).

From the Inside Flap

Photoshop is a program that offers unlimited possibilities, and that is why you see more books on Photoshop than any other creative application. It is important to choose the book that is most appropriate for you. The Digital Classroom for Photoshop CS5 is geared for beginners to intermediate users who need to understand the core capabilities of Photoshop and how to best take advantage of the tools needed to complete a task.
This book is perfect for graphic, web, interactive designers, and introductory photographers but may not be the book for you if you are just looking for new features. If you are just starting out with Photoshop, then every feature is new, and you will want to see how they fit into a successful workflow.
If you're a new user looking to get started, or have been self-taught, or are looking for a broad survey of everything that is possible with Photoshop, then the Digital Classroom is a good choice. After teaching Photoshop to thousands of people at American Graphics Institute, I've discovered that even long-time users who are self-taught can benefit from coverage of fundamentals. The step-by-step instructions, the lesson files and the videos on the included DVD are helpful for those starting out with Photoshop. Have fun discovering!

I have used CS2, CS3 and now recently upgraded to CS5. There were a few changes and improvements, and I wanted some help. I ordered this book because it was the first available, but I am not disappointed in the least. I think a novice or intermediate will be happy with the walkthrough style lessons, clear and easy to understand. The new features in CS5 are well covered, as well as all the basics. Included is a DVD with all lesson files.
I have used Kelby, Deke, and Eisenman in past, I rate this as good.....

The very first lesson jump starts you into the world of photoshop. Never having had any experience with photoshop before, I learned very quickly how to create, enhance and completely change images. The DVD is a lifesaver. In roughly five minutes, the instructor teaches the concepts in the chapter that usually take an hour to absorb by reading. I would recommend this book to anyone new to photoshop.

It was amazing to me how quickly I was able to get started in Photoshop CS5 with the help of this book. The instruction is clear, and the lessons are informative and helpful. The DVD is great too! It offers high quality video tutorials based on the lessons in the book. Its nice to see live examples of written text, for about the same price as most stand alone books. I was very happy with this purchase!

This book/DVD instructional combo starts you off with a bang. Anticipating that some purchasers may be familiar with earlier versions, the first lesson showcases the newest features in this latest version. Accompanied by a step-by-step video from the DVD, it creates an interesting and complex image you recreate, following the first lesson's text.

You begin by opening three images and combining them into a panorama. You then bring a new image into the panorama and remove a person from it. Another image is opened. That person is selected and his background hidden so it appears he's floating in air. Text is added, both vertical and horizontal. For a final touch, "waves" are sculpted from parts of the background panoramic image.

All the steps to recreate this image are in the text, and that's just the first lesson! But catch your breath - beginners aren't left behind.

If you are coming from an earlier version of Photoshop (or moving up from Photoshop Elements) you may well feel like diving right in. It's good to know that all the steps to (re)create that first lesson's image are given in the text, albeit in slightly different order than in the video. Even a novice can follow through and successfully complete that or any of the other projects.

As an experienced Photoshop user, I really enjoyed working through some of these new features right off the bat. I think someone new to Photoshop would gain an instant feeling of confidence. Seeing the instructor work through the lesson before you start, seeing how the tools and techniques work really makes a difference.

Those truly new to Photoshop may decide to actually "begin" with lesson 2. Watch the video, then work through the lesson.

I am a true beginner with Photoshop and don't feel this book really defines functions like I would like to see. It is OK as it does go through some functions but there aren't explanations about some of the things you are asked to do and I like to understand what happens when I select certain buttons. This way I feel I can really grasp the understanding of how each funtion/process works. I will be looking for another Photoshop book that addresses these things in more clarity and detail.

I have never used photoshop and this has definitely helped me learned its features quickly so far.

The first 1 star rating complained about pictures not matching what where they are suppose to be and not being being able to do some of the lessons. I don't have a Mac so I not sure if it is an issue with Macs, but everything has worked perfectly for me through the first 3 lessons I have done.

Looking forward to get on with the other lessons!

I am not a Photoshop expert, which is why I wanted a book that would make it accessible to an occasional user. This book is great for that. Some of the things I particularly like about it are:

1. The lessons are pretty self-contained, meaning that I could do them in any order. Depending on what my photos needed, I could go right to those tools, learn the basics, and get right to work.

2. The book does not try to explain every single tool in the Photoshop toolbox - I like that. By hitting the high points, I got a great introduction to what the program can do, as well as the confidence to play around with features on my own.

3. The lessons are not overly-complicated, and the real-life examples made it easy to apply the tools to my own photos.

4. The book is written in a friendly, conversational tone; between the laid-back style of the writing and the included DVD tutorials, I really felt like I was getting a private lesson in the comfort of my own home. My schedule doesn't allow me to go take lengthy classes right now, so being able to learn Photoshop at my own pace, when it was convenient for me, was a huge plus.

I can already tell that this book is going to be dog-eared very soon, as I am now addicted to Photoshop and will no doubt be referencing it often as I work on the huge archive of digital photos I have of my kids. I am really enjoying creating professional-quality photos for my family and I am so glad that I got this book to help me!
