My school has a unique curriculum, we only have a year of basic sciences before going to clinic. As a result, everything, including Physiology, was ridiculously crammed. We had to read cardiac physiology in a NIGHT, with about 100 pages+ from a Guyton physiology to understand on first reading. But this BRS Physiology was sufficient even for first learning. Just read the book and if there is any point that you are interested to pursue deeper or are not sure about, check it in a conventional textbook like Guyton.

I highly recommend BRS physiology for medical students who are overwhelmed and desperate.

This is one of the best medical physiology review books that I've seen. Others people on Amazon have extensively reviewed this book, so I'll use the following format for review:

Clarity: 5/5- It was easy to read and understand.

Brevity: 5/5- Used few words without sacrificing clarity.

Depth: 3/5- If you need more depth read her other book published by Saunders.

Breadth: 4/5- Not as comprehensive as could be, but good for a review.

Illustration quality: 4/5- I would have preferred a little more illustrations, however, again, can't ask too much from a review book.

Had purchased this for Step 1 because everyone raved about it. It is a good book but way too heavily detailed for the Step. That is, the concepts are very important, but don't touch this within 3 months of your exam; focus on questions and FA at that stage. This is good for a first-year med student who needs an introduction, or a second-year who needs remediation. The questions are overly detailed and mathematical.

My take is that people give this book wayyyyyyyyy too much credit. Sort of like one person says it's great, then the domino effect just takes over. I stopped reading it after going through a little more than half. I had probably done over 5,000 practice questions at that point and it dawned on me that these questions are nothing like what would be assessed on the real deal, and that proved to be the case. I scored 260s on Steps 1 and 2CK just for the record.

Good luck,

I think this is the best BRS there is. I used this book for course exam prep as well as board review. It is a great tool to highlight important concepts, and it explains things in a simple and effective way with the right amount of information.

This book is perfectly fine for reviewing material before a shelf, but the content is somewhat lacking in clinical correlations. Also, when compared to the BRS for anatomy, it seems poorly written. It also has less than half as many questions. As someone who loves questions for testing my knowledge, I found this BRS to be less than perfect. All of the chapters had around 50 questions, which were not enough.

This is book is good if you already have physiology knowledge and you want to review the main points of each system before your exam. It goes a little beyond introductory phys. books like Vander's (but not too much). You may not find it useful at all if you want to start learning physiology and you haven't read any other books yet! Each chapter is like 10-20 pages (no figures) and it provides short reviews on each system and it's cheaaap!!

I have used this since medical school and whoah, 5 years off of graduation I purchased another one and still continues to use it. Just shows how simple it is to understand things when you go back to the basics. And the basics does not get any better, concise and understandable(even to a college student) than this book.

Costanzo, in my eyes, is the best writer for physiology there is. With how important the pathophysiology is to being a good physician, its important to know the physiology behind it. This book was a great review for boards, and quizzing for tests.
