Editorial Reviews

Import version of her 2002 album (inspired by the Claude Lelouch movie 'And Now...Ladies & Gentlemen') from the French star who updates the French chanson tradition with elements of pop, blues & jazz. The album was produced by Robin Millar who was responsible for George Michael's lush 'Older' album.

Patricia Kaas is, by far, the greatest modern day singer. She has proven over and over her ability to conquer various styles of music, creating a sound which is not only unique, but eminently human. While "Tour de Charme" is my favorite of her albums, "Piano Bar", continues to keep my interest.
As for the negative reviews, i can't understand why someone would buy a CD entitled "Piano Bar" and complain that there is no excitement and pazzaz. Do you have any comprehension what piano bar music is supposed to sound like? Mdmslle Kaas certainly shows she does, giving each of the remade songs on the album (and her own original one), a new, unique, SULTRY sound like only Patricia can.
Let's identity the true reason Patricia is taking so much heat for this album--the fact that it's almost entirely in English. A previous reviewer flat out stated that Kaas should stick to French. Why should she, i ask? Most of the world speaks english; more people will be able to understand what she is singing about, including me (while i adore her other albums, not knowing what she is singing about is slightly annoying). In whatever language, her voice is magnificent.
i hope Patricia continues to explore English albums, maybe coming out with a totally original set of songs next time. Tres bien!

With the release of the DVD - AND NOW...LADIES & GENTLEMEN - many of us scanned the stores for a soundtrack, so imposing and impressive were the songs by costar Patricia Kaas. Finding no soundtrack, this CD entitled PIANO BAR is in essence the music from that enjoyable film. Minus the Michel Legrand music, here we have the songs that Kaas seems to own at present. Her voice is beautifully adept at defining the emotions of these lovely old ballads. She indeed understands the role of the chanteuse, and until another recording comes out with perhaps better studio techniques, then this collection is a more than adequate souvenir of a thoughtful lady's powers of communication. For those unfamiliar with this singer this is a fine introduction to her talent!

Listening to PK's voice in the English version of some of the most important French chansons was a pleasure to my ears. She gave these old songs her own vision and personal touch to turned them in nowadays lyrics.
She confirmed her status of "Grande Dame"of the French song. With this record this album will accompany your hot summer nights...Don't miss it !Hope to see her live.

Those of us who are fans of Patricia Kaas love her distinctively French musical style. The Piano Bar breaks from that style, a lounge-bar style CD mostly sung in English.

Even so, it is great relaxing music . And Patricia's voice sounds superb. There are lots of other singers who could have done this, but that doesn't take away anything from the CD. After all, she set out to make a musical tribute to lounge bar singers and this is the result.

One comment for those who are unsure as to why the mixed reviews. It does take a couple of listens before you appreciate its subtly understated style.

I purchased this CD because I liked the film "And Now Ladys and Gentlemen". I had never heard of Patricia Kass until I saw this film and heard her sing some of my favorite songs. If you liked the sound track from "A Man and A Woman" you will like this CD. Her voice is lovely and the songs are sung with a mellow jazz arrangement.

It's true,Patricia Kass's voice and timber are more suited for romantic French melodies and texts, however she shouldn't have waited this long to come up with an alboum in English.
"Piano-Bar" is perfectly made, her voice is smoother and more sensual in English than in French, some covers are very well done"My man","Yesterday When I was young","Autumn leaves""If you go away"(the most French of the English songs in the alboum).
Jazzy-cool and soul,it's tremendous...ba da ba da da ba da ba da...I recommend this for all Kaas fans in US.

One of THOSE albums.... Where you don't have to put any one song on repeat - because they are all good. Because Patricia's voice is at its best, fresh still, but also masterfully meandering the different paths of performance and always making the right turns.... If you are looking for her human side, this is the album that will take you there. She is as direct and as honest in her craft as she has ever been and even the songs that may claim one-thousand-and-one different performances by as many different performers, even with those, Patricia manages to boldly ensure that her personal stamp of sensuality, of being there but not really, of delivering a voice that is so elusive, so beguiling, so dreamy, it draws one in, and in, and in.... into the depths of her very soul, the depths of what each song is meant to be.... and THAT is what she delivers!

I loved Patricia Kaas in "And Now Ladies and Gentlemen" and I hoped to get a CD of her piano bar style as seen in the film. Unfortunately, this CD has horible arrangements and orchestration: echo-y, with a real dated sound of synthesized keyboard and electronic rhythm. Patricia Kaas would sound fabulous in a more "unplugged" version- ala Diana Krall, featuring her alluring voice and a simple piano, base and drum arrangement. This CD makes the songs sound very cheesy. Very disapointing!
