A franchise and fan base in perpetual search of validation finally had its ticket punched as 2016 dawned. Mike Piazza, who held records in one hand and a city’s rapt attention in the other, gained election to the Hall of Fame. Within weeks of this long-awaited announcement, the ballclub with whom he chose to cast his eternal lot, the New York Mets, made a date to retire his number.
In Piazza: Catcher, Slugger, Icon, Star, Greg W. Princecocreator of Faith and Fear in Flushing, the blog for Mets fans who like to read,” and author of Amazin’ Again, the story of the 2015 National League championsexplores the parallel paths Piazza and the Mets set out on in the early 1990s and how their individual journeys merged into a mutual quest for transcendence. From marriage of convenience to lifetime bond to a state of baseball grace reached only once before in team history, Piazza examines how the stranger from Los Angeles became New York’s favorite son and why Mets fans continued to rally to Piazza’s cause years after he took his final swing for them.

I was a huge fan of last year's "Amazin Again" and most of Greg's prior work. This effort, while solid, just does not measure up quite as well. Greg does his usual great job of presenting the subject matter with passion, flawless detail and 100% accuracy. However, the first issue is that the Mets of the 90's and 2000's, with a few exceptions, just don't provide as compelling of a subject matter as the 2015 season did. The second reason is the evolution in writing style. "Amazin," had such an easy and natural flow to it, blending humor and Mets history into the story. In "Piazza", Greg seems to be working a lot harder at being a writer to the detriment of the reader. Longer, sometimes run-on sentences. Some drawn out and/or confusing references that required a second read-through. Still a worthwhile read and great reflection on Piazza's impact to the franchise, the city and the fan base.

If you look at Mike Piazza's Hall of Fame plaque, you see 5 teams so an outsider might wonder why Piazza insisted that he wear a Mets cap on that plaque. That same person might also wonder why Piazza is such an iconic figure in Mets history. Greg W. Prince gives us the answers and much more in this outstanding and essential new book. Prince doesn't give us another Piazza biography, he tells us why Piazza is one of the most important and beloved figures in Mets history by placing his time with the Mets in historical context. Piazza didn't just play the game well, he helped lead the transformation of the Mets from insignificance into a World Series team. Prince tells us how and why this happened as only he can while taking you back to the moments when you were on the edge of your seat waiting for Piazza's bat to send a baseball high and deep into the Flushing night.

Another must read for Mets fans by blogger/author Greg Prince. As always, written as a fan but not as a homer, he brings the Piazza era, the Mets seasons that preceded it, and what Piazza has meant to the Mets since leaving the team and then retiring, to life with humor, a photographic memory, a keen historical perspective, and the passion one would expect from a Mets fan whose blog is called Faith and Fear in Flushing. We like to think of ourselves as baseball's most passionate, diehard, knowledgable and, well, snarkiest fans (fans of other teams will argue with the first three descriptors, not the fourth), and it all comes through here (although Greg might be on the polite end of the snark). Bottom line, if you're a Mets fan, this book belongs in your library.

Greg Prince writes with the detail of an historian and the passion of a fan. Greg understands what the arrival of Mike Piazza did for Mets fans and the franchise as a whole. A magnificent storyteller, Greg tells us we about Piazza's many highs and occasional challenges -- you are never forgiven, Roger Clemens. This is a great book for someone who is a Mets fan, a baseball fan or who just likes to read.

Greg Prince, as always, finds the connections in Met history to construct a wonderful narrative. His latest book begins in 1992, which connects the Mets first Hall of Famer celebrating his induction to Cooperstown immortality with franchise's second Hall member beginning his illustrious career. From there, Greg paints context for outsiders to understand why Mike Piazza is so beloved to Mets fans. He revisits the bleach-soaked "Worst Team Money Can Buy" Mets who made life miserable for all involved while Piazza was bringing non-stop cheers to Los Angelinos. Prince continues on through more Mets missteps of the 1990s while the Queens faithful can only dream of a star like Piazza to carry the team out of the shadow cast by their Bronx neighbor. Incredibly, their paths converge, as Mike is everything Mets fans dreamed of.
Greg touches on all of Piazza's signature moments in New York, details his celebrated departure & returns to Shea Stadium and Citi Field, and wraps up where the book started: in the Baseball Hall of Fame. If you are a Mets fan, particularly one such as myself who was too young to revel in their 60's & 80's glory, this book is for you. It chronicles some time periods in the club's history that no other author would dare venture towards, and there's no better author for the job. High recommendation, especially if you want to smile and relive the epic moments of the Piazza era (and what Met fan wouldn't?)
