I read Pickpocket Frankie in a matter of hours.I didn't realise how long I had been reading until the book was over. This to me is a sign of a great book, a book that draws you in, a book that allows you to lose yourself so much that you forget the world around you until the book is over. Pickpocket Frankie is definitely one of these rare books.
Pickpocket Frankie in my opinion is a humorous, feel good, lighthearted book. It's a story of one person's survival in New York with a very large nest egg, (I'm not telling you how he accumulated the nest egg, you need to read it for that) That is until his nest egg goes missing then Frankie is forced to face up to his actions past and present if he has any chance of getting it back.
I will admit that after the first few pages I was wondering if I could continue reading. One of my triggers in anything, whether it be books, movies etc is anything bad happening to children. One thing being abandonment but it was definitely the humour and Frankie being a quick witted and strong character that got me past this. Even though after reading the book I can understand why the events of Frankies abandonment by his father needed to happen. I'm being vague, arent I? You just need to start reading.
I loved the humour throughout the book and I could relate to the character of Frankie in so many ways especially as he uses humour as a defense mechanism which is something I do. The way he refers to books, tv shows, songs are very clever on authors part.
One thing I particularly love about Roberto Scarlato is how different each of books/short stories are. They are remarkable, extraordinary, original and different, no two are the same. This author can pen his name to any genre from crime to fantasy.
So it's exciting to start one of his books not knowing how it will be but knowing that you'll be guaranteed a great thrilling read that you won't want to end.
Pickpocket Frankie is well worth your time and as with all Mr Scarlato's books you'll be hoping for a sequel. So go start this 5 star read. Enjoy!
Written in sometimes alternating first person POV, the book reads almost like an interview outlining the tragic tale of a young boy forced to grow up too soon then winding through his shady life as a pick pocket until one day everything changes. There were interesting twists and turns throughout and intrigue that tied up nicely at the end.
I appreciate the element of humor interlaced throughout allowing for some comic relief in an otherwise heavy storyline. I also like the sub-story love affair that blossoms between Frankie and Claudia.
I have to say though, without adding spoilers, I sort of felt like there may have been a section missing between sections 7 and 8. I wants to know more about what happened during that time span. Still, it didn't detract from the story. It was a good, quick read.
