However, I started using the size-0 Caspian needles for a sock and had to stop using them before I got to the heel. The lamination on the wood is flaking off in splinters and catching on my knitting and on my skin. I can see places where the wood has flaked off to form a trough in the side of the needle.
I'm returning my set in disappointment for a refund. I'll try ordering a replacement set to see if it was only that one batch which was defective.
UPDATE: the replacement set continues to have splinters (not as bad as the first set, but still noticeable). Worse, one of the US0 needles broke in half while doing a K2tog on a sock toe. I have been knitting with wooden needles for more than 20 years and have never broken a needle!
First, they are not very durable. The very first time I used the size 1s one of the needles broke. I think that the different layers of wood are not fused very strongly, because the break was clean between a layer of blue and a layer of green. I've worked with laminated birch needles before (Knitters Pride Dreamz), but these seem much flimsier-- they have more "give" and seem to bend while you work with them.
Second, they are a little too grippy for my taste. It takes a little more effort than I'd like to slide the work along the needle (for comparison's sake, I find the Knitters Pride Dreamz to be a little too slippy-- ChiaoGoo and Clover bamboo are both perfect in that respect, for my taste).
Thirdly (and this is me nitpicking), the colors aren't as vibrant as I was hoping for. I wasn't expecting plastic-y bright, but the colors are pretty muddy and subtle.
I do, however, love that these come in sets of 6. I work with only 4 needles at a time, so that means that I have two extra needles in each size (only one for the size 1s that broke). Overall I'd consider trying some of the larger size needles to see if they seem sturdier, but I'm not convinced I'd buy this set again. (If I did, it would be to try a new color, and for the extra needles).
Overall they're okay, and I'll continue to work with them.
